Manchester United ‘Still in the Running’ for £17.5 million Manchester City Target

Manchester United are reported as ‘still in the running for Gabriel Veron’. The Red Devils are said to be still interested in signing the 18-year-old Palmeiras and Brazil forward this summer. The youngster has been linked with several high-profile European clubs since last year with currently, Italian side, Sassuolo, reported to be the frontrunners for the player, but Man Utd are still a strong contender.

Veron is currently one of the best young prospects in South America. So far, the player has made 40 senior appearances for Palmeiras, with 11 goals and 5 assists across all competitions. The youngster is keen on a move this summer and Man Utd are the top contenders to bring in the player. The player currently has a contract running with Palmeiras till 2025 with a hefty release clause of £52 million. Despite this, United could certainly get the player for a much lesser amount.

Veron is a product of the Palmeiras youth academy and represented Brazil’s Under-17 team on several occasions. He helped the team win the U17, FIFA World Cup in 2019, also winning the Golden Ball in the process. His strength lies in his versatility as a forward and attacker. He can play both flanks, although preferably the right-wing and can even play through the middle.

Palmeiras’ Under-17 coach, Artur Itiro, gave his take on the player to The Athletic in 2019.

“He has a great relationship with the ball, but that’s only part of it, he is also able to keep control at high speed. You don’t see many players who are able to marry those two characteristics, even at senior level.”

“He is a player who unbalances opponents, and he can do it on both wings. On the left, he cuts in and drives towards the box; on the right he likes to reach the byline.

“And we have even been using him as a No 10 recently, trying to make the most of his dribbling skills in the tight spaces around the penalty area. That shows that his game is not just about speed.”

According to the Sun, Palmeiras were said to want £28 million but reports indicate that the player’s actual value could be around £17.5 million. This was back in January, when Man City and Man Utd were head-to-head for the player. Now, according to Calciomercato, Palmeiras want somewhere around 20 million euros (roughly £17 million), but could close with a €15-€16million deal.

This could certainly attract United to make a move for the player this summer and add to their list of firepower ahead of the coming season. Calciomercato have also reported that, despite the recent interest and strong intent shown by Sassuolo, the Red Devils are still ‘in the front row’. However, Manchester United would need to act swiftly, as Sassuolo are preparing to step up their interest soon.

Ole has already made one hefty attacking move in the transfer market this season with the signing of Jadon Sancho. The club also have links with Varane, Camavinga, Declan Rice, Ruben Neves and other players this transfer season. If he manages to land two or three out of these players, it would bring a massive boost to the team and would go a long way in helping United position themselves as title contenders next season. The team are hoping to compete for the title next season and definitely need new talent in the squad.

Veron’s versatility means that he could play in any area of the attacking range, which could mean more game time. Also, his tricks and technical ability could provide United with a breath of fresh air.

Solskjaer is still yet to make a strong bid for the player this summer transfer despite interest. Whether or not the transfer could happen remains to be seen but Gabriel Veron seems destined to be a star in the making and United could have their own version of Gabriel Jesus if things work out well enough.
