Manchester United are reportedly linked with a summer move for Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz. United’s pursuit of new recruits continues as the 2022-23 season edges closer. Even with Frenkie de Jong being the topmost priority target this summer, the club seems keen on exploring their options in case this deal goes cold and is off the negotiation table.
According to Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are in talks with Italian club Napoli for signing their midfield maestro, Fabian Ruiz. The 26-year-old has also attracted the interest of several other clubs such as Arsenal, West Ham United and Real Madrid. Nevertheless, Manchester United seem to be ahead of their competitors in the pursuit of Ruiz this summer.
It is certain that new United manager Erik ten Hag is keen on bringing a player who could fill the midfield void created after the departure of Paul Pogba. Moreover, the United central midfield is one such area which needs utmost strengthening this summer. Thus, the Napoli ace is said to be on Ten Hag’s radar and the Dutch manager is positively eyeing a swoop.

Ruiz has been a part of the Italian outfit since 2018 when he arrived from Real Betis. The Spain international is used to playing in a central midfield role, operating from a deep-lying position. He can also be set up further forward in a more attacking capacity.

In the last term, Ruiz scored seven times and assisted five in a total of 38 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) across all competitions. Ruiz also had an impressive pass completion rate, rounding up to 89.6% (via FBref.com) in Serie A last season. Thus, it is certain that he would be of great value to Ten Hag’s starting eleven and would most likely mend the midfield woes at Old Trafford.
