According to fresh reports, Manchester United are targeting a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes. The Red Devils want to add depth to their midfield for next season and the 24-year-old has been added to their shortlist as a potential option.
Matheus Nunes joined from Sporting CP last summer and has enjoyed a successful start to life in the Premier League. The Portuguese has featured in 35 games for the Wolves in all competitions this season (stats via Transfermarkt). He scored his first league goal against Chelsea recently.

The central midfielder was a crucial part of the Primeira Liga club too, having made 50 appearances in all competitions last season. He was also a part of the Portugal squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The midfielder managed 2 games, including one off the bench.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United are among the clubs eyeing a summer move for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes. However, FC Barcelona, Newcastle United and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the player.
The 24-year-old joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Sporting CP last summer for a reported fee of £38 million. Despite his £44 million release clause being removed, GOAL reports that the English side may sell their midfielder for a bid of over £50 million.

Nunes is primarily a central midfielder. But he can also function as an attacking midfielder or on the flanks. In fact, he has played in six different positions this season: central midfield, defensive and attacking midfield, wide midfield and on the flanks (via Whoscored).
The Portuguese international has excellent ball control and loves to take on his man 1v1. He is a very attacking player and has a very direct style on the ball. Off the ball, Nunes has a great work rate and defensive awareness. However, his passing and decision-making, especially in the final third, still require refining.
Verdict
Matheus Nunes possesses various qualities that could make him a good fit for Erik ten Hag’s style and midfield system. The Dutch manager has already used Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, and Marcel Sabitzer in a variety of roles.
Primarily creative playmakers, the trio have also been used as deep-lying playmakers with great success this season. The former Sporting CP midfielder could be used in a similar role next season while also providing good cover for the wide positions.

However, a fee of over £50 million for the 24-yar-old central midfielder as a backup could be a little excessive for the Red Devils. Moreover, United are also looking for a big-money striker signing in the upcoming summer transfer window.
