4-2-3-1 With Sancho, McTominay & Shaw | How Man United’s Starting XI Could Look Like Against Tottenham

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

We look at the probable starting line-up of Manchester United as they host Tottenham Hotspur this Wednesday in the Premier League. The Red Devils look to redeem themselves having delivered a series of underwhelming performances in the lead-up to the fixture at Old Trafford.

Despite having lost only one of their last five league outings, the Red Devils will be looking for a victory, with the team having endured a draw against Newcastle United last weekend. Yet to gain consistency in their displays, the game against Spurs is likely to pose a challenge for Erik ten Hag’s side on Wednesday.

Facing a team that has conceded the joint-second least number of goals (10) in the Premier League so far this season, the Red Devils will be wary of Spurs’ efficiency on the pitch, with the hosts themselves having struggled to find the back of the net in recent outings.

Expected to produce a compelling match-up, Manchester United will be keen on delivering a competitive display whilst Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to move up into second place in the Premier League table before the weekend.

Christian Eriksen’s availability remains uncertain after the Danish midfielder missed out against Newcastle owing to illness. Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, Axel Tuanzebe, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams remain out of contention, although Scott McTominay and Martin Dubravka are expected to return to the match-day squad after missing out against the Magpies owing to suspension and ineligibility respectively.

Ten Hag is unlikely to make major changes to the starting line-up, with Fred emerging as the likeliest of players to be replaced in the starting line-up on Wednesday.

Probable Manchester United Starting Line-Up Against Tottenham Hotspur

Goalkeeper

David De Gea (GK): Promising in his approach, De Gea will be looking to continue remaining a reliable presence between the sticks moving forward. Expected to be tested on Wednesday, the Spaniard will be keen on being at the top of his game against Spurs at Old Trafford.

Defenders

Diogo Dalot (RB): Having struggled to deliver notable contributions in recent outings, Dalot will be looking to return to his best over the coming weeks. Unlikely to be granted rest owing to a lack of options in the position, the full-back will be hoping to gain consistency in his output moving forward.

Raphael Varane (RCB): A decent outing saw Varane deliver a solid performance against Newcastle last weekend. With the team in need of fortifying their defence, the Frenchman will be keen on delivering valuable contributions over the coming weeks.

Lisandro Martinez (LCB): A vital cog in Ten Hag’s system, Martinez is expected to remain amongst the first names on the team sheet over the foreseeable future. Having been amongst the most consistent performers on the pitch for Manchester United this season, the centre-back will be keen on delivering a solid performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Luke Shaw (LB): Having delivered a series of decent performances, Shaw will be hoping to return to his best over the coming fixtures. Likely to retain his place on Wednesday, the left-back will be looking to find consistency in his displays over the coming weeks.

Midfielders

Casemiro (CDM): A competitive figure in midfield, Casemiro continues to remain a reliable performer on the pitch. Expected to play a majority of games moving forward, the Brazilian will be keen on contributing to the best of his abilities over the coming fixtures.

Scott McTominay (CM): Having struggled to make the starting line-up in recent weeks, McTominay is likely to regain his place in midfield on Wednesday. Amongst a number of players who have shown promising potential this season, the Scotsman will be keen on contributing to the team’s improvement moving forward.

Attackers

Antony (RW): Promising in his performances, Antony will be keen on being consistent in his displays moving forward. Unlikely to be displaced from the starting line-up, the winger will be looking to perform to the best of his abilities over the coming weeks.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM): Having been underwhelming on the pitch in recent outings, Fernandes will be looking to deliver an impactful performance against Spurs at Old Trafford. With the team having lacked creativity in the final third, the Portuguese attacker will be looking to add the same moving forward.
