Manchester United Announce Tyrell Malacia | 1st Summer Signing of 22/23

Manchester United have announced Dutch defender Tyrell Malacia as their first signing of the 2022 summer transfer window. This could be the start of a very important transfer window for Erik ten Hag’s side, following a horrific 21/22 season.

Olympique Lyon previously had a deal agreed with Feyenoord but United swooped in late with a better deal. United’s representatives changed the player’s mind while the Eredivisie club also found the Red Devils’ deal more profitable. The English club agreed to pay €15 million up front plus €2 million in add-ons to Feyenoord.

The Red Devils are going through a transfer drought and have been heavily criticized for it. However, Manchester United have given their fans a glimpse of hope by confirming the transfer of Tyrell Malacia. The 22-year-old plays as a left-back and had an impressive 2021/22 season. The Dutch connection between the player and the United manager might have accelerated the negotiations.

The Dutch defender has agreed to sign a four-year deal that will last till June 2026, with the club having the option to extend for one more year. The Red Devils certainly needed to improve their left-back department and the full-back has the quality to do that.

Who Is Tyrell Malacia And What Can He Bring To The Manchester United Side?

The 22-year-old defender has made 136 senior appearances for Feyenoord across all competitions (stats via transfermarkt). Moreover, he also has five international caps for the Netherlands national team. He is currently amongst the best young full-backs in Dutch football with huge potential. He joined the Feyenoord academy when he was aged nine.

Malacia rose through the ranks at the Dutch club and made his first-team debut in 2017. He was a part of the Feyenoord team that won the KNVB Trophy and the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2018. He made his national team debut recently in the World Cup qualifier against Montenegro in 2021.

Malacia is a very energetic player who uses his pace and physique to beat his opponents. He also has very good dribbling skills which help him to escape the opposition press. His good passing ability allows him to create chances for the team’s forwards.

The Dutchman is also very good at tackling and has the necessary pace to keep up with the fast opposition wingers. More importantly, he has always looked committed during a game, keeping full concentration on the match which has ensured that he makes very few errors throughout the season.

The 22-year-old defender made 32 appearances for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie last season, scoring one goal and assisting four. In addition, the player is very comfortable playing at any position on the left-wing. Erik ten Hag will need Malacia’s energy to deal with the intensity of the Premier League and the youngster could be a huge hit with the United fans.
