UEFA Champions League Preview: Mourinho wary of “difficult group”, Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford and more

United, Groups, champions league, jose mourinho

Manchester United begin their Champions League campaign away at Young Boys to improve their season under Jose Mourinho which has been poor so far.

Manchester United return to the Champions League consecutively for the first team since Sir Alex Ferguson retired against Young Boys on Wednesday night. United drawn in Group H comprising of Juventus and Valencia which will also see the return of Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after spending 6 seasons with the Red Devils. And Jose has reacted fairly positively to the return of the 5 time Ballon D’or winner.

“I think he [Cristiano] likes to come. My feeling when we played with Real Madrid here was that he was happy to come back and was happy to play at Old Trafford, but he was also happy to score and to win,

He comes with a Juventus shirt, he went to Juventus to win the Champions League, he comes to Old Trafford to score goals and to win the match.

But Old Trafford likes him and Old Trafford will always react in a positive way to him, which is a great thing.”

Talking about the draw, Jose believes that all 3 teams have the capabilities to cause them trouble.

“Difficult for us, difficult for them [the other teams]. A very difficult group with one of the biggest candidates to reach the final [in Juventus] and a team who made an incredible investment on top of a fantastic team they had, so a big, big candidate.

Valencia is also one of the top four teams in Spain and that says everything.

Young Boys is, of course, a team that comes from the fourth pot and the world will say it’s the team that didn’t have a chance to qualify but for some reason they qualified, they went to Croatia and won in the play-offs [against Dinamo Zagreb], for some reason they beat Basel and they won the Swiss title.

On top of that, they play on an artificial pitch, which is a big advantage for them and a big disadvantage for the other teams.”

Manchester United Champions League Preview

Manchester United had an underwhelming campaign last season when they lost to Sevilla in the round of 16 after drawing the first leg away. At home, it was one of the worst Champions League performance by United in recent memory. There wasn’t any hunger, energy to win and that’s when the Jose out chants were starting to be heard all around. And Jose further poked the fans post defeat with his comments,

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]

“That is not the end of the world. I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock Man United out at home at Old Trafford,”

I sit in this chair with Porto, Man United out, I sit in this chair with Real Madrid, Man United out.

So is not something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment, obviously.”

– Jose Mourinho[/perfectpullquote]

I think this is a big season for Mourinho especially in the Champions League. United should show progress and for that they have to get out of the group which consists of tough teams. Also, United have to make sure that they do it with a bit of style as they were criticized was their style of play especially in the Champions League. Otherwise, Zidane has already been linked to the job and he has started looking for players which he will bring to United.

So, if Jose doesn’t want to face the sack, he has to deliver this season.
