Manchester United Ready to Sell Flop Harry Maguire in January, Three Premier League Clubs Interested

Harry Maguire, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan

Manchester United have reportedly informed Harry Maguire that he is free to leave the club in the winter transfer window. Erik ten Hag stood by Maguire’s side in July when he announced that the Englishman would remain the club captain despite lack of form. However, things seem to have changed after the Dutch manager’s first four months at the club.

The 29-year-old centre-back arrived at Old Trafford in 2019 for a world record fee of £80m during the reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He was instantly made club captain upon his arrival, considering he had already captained Leicester City to successful seasons.

The Englishman had a decent 2019-20 season. However, things went south for the defender as his performances dipped from the 2020-21 season. His inconsistent performances in the red shirt led to outrage amongst United fans.

The Guardian reported in November that Manchester United will be accepting offers for Harry Maguire next summer. Erik Ten Hag wants to continue the squad overhaul at Old Trafford and is willing to sell the centre-back to fund his transfers, even if it means selling him at a much lower fee.

Now, according to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti (via Sport Bible), the Red Devils will allow the 29-year-old to leave in the January transfer window. Three Premier League clubs are keeping tabs Maguire including his former club Leicester City. The Englishman has a contract with United till 2025 but the club are willing to sell him for as little as €30m (£26.1m).

Manchester United signed Harry Maguire for a mammoth fee of £80 million, making him the most expensive defender in football history. The club’s current expectations regarding transfer fees for the defender show how much he has failed to impress. Moreover, his injury this season has obstructed him to prove himself or settle into Ten Hag’s system.

The Red Devils struggled massively at the beginning of the season when the Dutchman started Maguire alongside Lisandro Martinez. However, a string of good results came along as soon as the manager decided to drop the Englishman and pair up Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the back.

Is It The Right Decision For Manchester United To Let Go Of Harry Maguire?

Ten Hag favours playing the combination of Varane and Martinez. The Dutchman likes to play proactive football with high intensity. Varane and Martinez tick all the boxes required to implement the manager’s system. The United backline now has a lot of pace and energy, allowing them to defend with a high line.

All of that is not possible with Harry Maguire’s presence. The sluggish pace of the United captain makes the team vulnerable when they are playing with a high defensive line. Moreover, the individual mistakes committed week in, week out did not make it easier for the 29-year-old to retain his place in the starting lineup.

The combination of the Frenchman and the Argentine seems to be more stable and both have better communication between them. Whereas the English centre-back seems to struggle while communicating with both Varane and Martinez.

Manchester United will be entering the crucial stages of the season where they will be playing knockout matches in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League while also competing for a top-four spot in the Premier League. They will need good depth in the squad to get positive results.

Although Maguire is a decent option, he doesn’t seem to fit in Ten Hag’s preferred playing style. If the Red Devils cash in on the Englishman, they could go in for a player who is a more suited option to the Dutch manager’s tactics.

United will need to try to find the best possible offer and recoup some of the money they spent on the 29-year-old centre-back. Moreover, they will need to do an even more significant job – find a new permanent club captain.
