The Reason Anthony Martial Turned Down A New Contract At Manchester United

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial has turned down the latest contract offer from Manchester United, who were looking to convince him to commit to a new long-term contract.

The Frenchman will be out of contract by the end of the season, although United have the option of extending it for one more year until 2020. Some might suggest that Martial turned down the offer to get paid the same as the club’s top players.

The 22-year-old has scored four goals in 10 appearances for the Red Devils so far this season. The French international has recently grown into a key member of Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven – scoring in the 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle and bagging a brace the recent 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

Martial was bought from Monaco for a reported £44.1 million under Louis van Gaal’s management back in 2015. He had a stellar first season under van Gaal, scoring 17 goals in all competitions as he was the club’s top scorer for the season. And his second season was somewhat equally impressive.

“I think it’s probably the general answer of everybody that gets offered a new contract nowadays, that they turn a new one down,” Gary Neville wrote in his column on Sky Sports; adding that his body language isn’t great, as for the movement off the ball and that he does not make enough moves.

At just 22 years old, Martial’s potential continues to shine through on some occasions, although his inability to provide consistently strong performance remains an issue for himself and the team. The former Monaco man has an opportunity to secure his position as a first team player and show fans that he’s rightfully in that team and he can rise up to the occasion when the team needs him.

However, limited playing time has frustrated the youngster. His development, like all other players his age, depends on game time.

Mourinho‘s side will be looking for a victory against Everton side at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils have shown encouraging fighting spirit during recent matches and will be looking forward to much-needed victory. United’s season has been off to a turbulent start with wins coming few and far in between in all competitions. They have collected 13 points so far from 8 games in the Premier League.
