Arsenal have appointed midfielder Martin Odegaard as the new men’s senior team captain. The Norwegian has been handed the captain’s armband permanently ahead of the start of the 2022-23 season.
The Gunners have been without a permanent captain for the last six months since the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was incidentally stripped of the captaincy by manager Mikel Arteta last campaign. However, Martin Odegaard has now been named as the men’s first-team captain for Arsenal.
The statement released by the club read:
“We are delighted to announce that Martin Odegaard has been named our new men’s first-team captain.”
“Odegaard has experience in wearing the armband, having been Norway captain since March 2021, whom he has won 43 caps for.”
“We wish Martin every success as our captain.”
Whilst Alexandre Lacazette was previously assumed to become the captain of Mikel Arteta’s ship, the Gunners never officially announced a new club captain after Aubameyang. Following the Frenchman’s free transfer to Olympique Lyon this summer, it is the Norwegian midfielder who has been bestowed upon the captain’s role and will now undertake his duties on a full-time basis.

The 23-year-old joined the Gunners on a six-month loan spell in the second half of the 20-21 season. Following his successful loan stint at the Emirates, Odegaard signed for Arsenal in 2021. Since arriving in North London, the midfielder has been extremely decisive for the Gunners.
Odegaard was one of the key players who helped the North London side finish fifth in the Premier League last season. He scored seven goals and provided five assists in 40 appearances (stats via Transfermarkt) across all competitions in the last campaign.
