Is This €40m Rated Midfield Star Thinking of an Return to Arsenal Already ?

Martin Odegaard, Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti, Arsenal

According to Football.London, Arsenal have not entirely given up on signing Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard this summer with reports emerging that the player might leave Bernabeu in this transfer window.

Odegaard joined the Gunners on loan from Real Madrid last January, making 14 appearances in the Premier League, providing 2 assists and netting a goal. He quickly settled in and certainly had a positive spell at the Emirates, with manager Mikel Arteta wanting to bring him back to the Emirates.

Before that, the Norwegian international had an excellent loan spell at Real Sociedad. Mikel Arteta was largely impressed with the player’s abilities and saw him as the perfect replacement for Mesut Ozil, with his vision and passing quite ‘Ozil-esque’ and his ability to solve the creativity problems his team is facing.

Real Madrid appeared to have given him assurances over his involvement at the Bernabeu next season, with Carlo Ancelotti clearly stating that he’s a part of his long-term plans. The 22-year-old even released a statement thanking the Gunners and the fans which seemed to close the door on a possible return.

Nevertheless, the Spanish giants are in dire need of cash and this could tempt them into selling their star performers to set off their debts. Odegaard is valued at around €40m and if an offer around his asking price lands on their table, the Madrid fans might have to bid farewell to one of their top talents.

Also, Cadena SPR (via The Mirror) recently reported that the player is unsettled at Real Madrid and is eyeing a return to the Emirates. The report claimed that Odegaard looks disconnected from his teammates and is not 100 per cent happy.

However, fresh reports suggest that Odegaard could stay at the Bernabeu after all. Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti seems to have closed the door on his exit after Toni Kroos suffered an injury and is set to miss the start of the new season. With two years left on his current contract at Real Madrid and Emile Smith Rowe filling in the number 10 position, Arsenal fans might have to wait it out till the end – if at all he makes the switch to the Emirates once again.

Several reports have emerged since the end of last season with Leicester City’s James Maddison and Lyon’s Houssem Aouar amongst the star names to fill the creative void left after Ozil’s departure. These players certainly take the spotlight with their proven excellence, but it is difficult to look past Odegaard’s skillset and his successful loan spell in North London.

Odegaard was like a breath of fresh air for the Gunners during his loan spell at Arsenal and felt at home during his journey with the Red and Whites. His impact on the attack was almost immediate and his style of play seemed to suit Arteta’s tactics precisely. Although he failed to make a solid statement in some of the games, his fluid movement and eye for a line-breaking pass helped revive Arsenal’s previously dull attack during his brief spell.

Odegaard is certainly a great option but for Arsenal to set a mark, they need a player who excels in every area of midfield. James Maddison excels in set pieces and is a goal-scoring threat whenever he gets the ball. A proper dead-ball specialist who is a Premier League proven player, a player that could improve the Gunners massively. The Leicester City man would be a huge upgrade on the current Arsenal squad and his pedigree of excellence speaks for himself.

Technical Director Edu Gaspar and his team need to sort out their priorities quickly. There’s not much time left for the Premier League to start and they need to act quickly. Only time will tell what Arteta’s men have in store for their fans this summer.
