FC Barcelona secured the deal for Frenkie de Jong, Ajax midfielder, in the ongoing summer transfer window. Soon after the agreement, FC Barcelona reached a verbal agreement with de Jong’s teammate, Matthijs de Ligt. However, the deal is not moving further ahead after both Matthijs de Ligt and his agent are demanding increased wages.

The breakthrough season has created the clouds over de Ligt’s Barcelona move. Mino Raiola, the agent of de Ligt, is demanding the increase of wages for the player. FC Barcelona were confident of negotiating a deal worth €70 million for the defender. However, with Manchester United entering the fray, the complete scenario has changed.
The Old Trafford based outfit is offering a lucrative offer worth €14 million per year for the Ajax defender. Barcelona are not ready to pay this huge wages as they believe that this could bring the wage parity with other players. The lucrative deal for a 19-year-old could cause unrest in the club. Also, the president of Blaugrana wants to stick to the old deal.
Manchester United shipped in more than 50 goals and had less clean sheets in the Premier League 2018-19. The club has to sort out the defense before the season commences on July 1. Ed Woodward is looking for many players like Kalidou Koulibaly, Varane but no deal has been finalised in the transfer window as of now. Signing De Ligt from Ajax would be a masterstroke from Ed Woodward.
On the other hand, De Ligt has to choose which club he will play in 2019-20. Both the clubs, Manchester United and FC Barcelona, have a rich footballing history. In the end, De Ligt might have to choose between Messi or money.
