Monchi The Mastermind | Everything You Need To Know About The New Director Of Football To Be Appointed By Arsenal

Monchi

Recently the news that is finding a lot of media space is the speculation that Arsenal are immediately looking to appoint someone who would take up the responsibility of director of football and steer them into the realm of stability. And the leading candidate is a man who is as of now plying his trade in Italy’s capital, Rome. A.S Roma’s Monchi, who is currently in the position of director of football in the capital city can strike up a partnership with Unai Emery yet again if reports from northern part of London are to be believed.

The event that triggered this speculative news is obviously the departure of Sven Mislintat from Arsenal which was confirmed in the first half of February. He left the Gunners after completing just 13 months of his tenure creating a huge void at the helm of club’s leadership position.

Arsenal are therefore looking for someone who can fill up the position between head of football, Raul Sanllehi and their head coach, Unai Emery.

Mislintat left London after a series of decisions that saw Ivan Gazidis leave Arsenal for A.C Milan. This move indicated a will at the club’s part to change the way Arsenal’s administrative business is handled.

As a result, Sanllehi stepped up to take further responsibilities. There was a lookout for a technical director as well and because of that it is understood that Mislintat would have been demoted. Hence, the departure ensured.

Mislintat holded an influential position in Dortmund where he played a major role in bringing Ousmane Dembele from France. He is also credited with bringing Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Germany. They were later sold and these proved to be a huge profit points for the club.

At Arsenal, he made a good decision by grabbing up the opportunity to bring Unai Emery. He is also understood to be the brains behind the signings of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, who are now an integral part of the team.

All of these definitely suggests that the departure of Mislintat is indeed a loss for the club. However, make no mistake, if all the reports turns out to be true, then Arsenal will find a gem in Monchi.

Monchi has an impressive track record that suggests that he is extremely reliable. In 2000, he was appointed as the director of football for Sevilla when they were relegated from Spanish top flight.

Not only did he help them regain their top flight status, he went on to win 11 trophies with Sevilla during his tenure which includes 5 Europa League titles, not to forget the 3 back-to-back titles from 2014 to 2016, that effectively made Sevilla a force to reckon with in Spanish La Liga.

Ramon Rodriguez Monchi, commonly known as Monchi started his career with Sevilla’s youth setup as a Goalkeeper. He made his senior debut with the reserves in the 1988-89 season in Segunda division B.

The Spaniard earned his first appearance in the main squad against Real Soceidad in 1991. Monchi played a vast majority of his career as a back up to Juan Carlos Unzue. He decided to call his time in 1999 at the age of 30. His playing career was not illustrious. However, it all changed when he took up a role behind the scenes at Sevilla. His career has been nothing short of amazing after that.

When Monchi was appointed in Sevilla, he was tasked with two objectives by the board: develop the club’s youth system and implement a vast scouting policy inside and outside Spain. Monchi helped discover Diego Capel, Alberto Moreno, Jesus Navas, Antonio Puerta, Sergio Ramos and he also created a network of over 700 scouts around the world.

With the help of this setup, he oversaw the recruitment and sale of a number of profitable bargains which includes Adriano, Dani Alves, Julio Baptista, Federico Fazio, Seydou Keita and Ivan Rakitic, generating a profit of around €200 million in the transfer market.

He asked the board to leave Sevilla in the 2016 off-season. He finally departed in April 2017 and went on to sign a four-year contract with Roma to take up responsibilities of the similar kind.

At Roma, the transition was a painless one and he continued his exemplary work and has been credited with spotting and signing of several high-rated youngsters such as Cengiz Under and Justin Kluivert.

The fact that makes Monchi so good is his eye for emerging talent and the knack of grabbing them at a cut price. He watches as many as 10 games a weekend himself and identifies new potential targets. He makes sure to watch the player both live and in video to ensure that the target, if signed, will help the team with their goals. As is evident with his track record, he has been really successful in doing so.

So it comes as a no-brainer that Monchi is revered as one of the best professionals in the business and is highly sought after. Everton, Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG are few clubs that were associated with him in the past.

However, Roma lured him away from the Andalusian club. On observing this pattern, it can be deduced that money and riches are not the primary factor that attracts Monchi. It is rather the prospect of creating a legacy from scratch and helping a club by staying true to its vision, that drives him.

This is where Arsenal steps in. They are one of the only top flight big six clubs in England who don’t have a continuous pattern of spending big on transfers in this era of crazy market fees.

Monchi, with his network of scouts, can help bring young talents to Emirates. He is the kind of director who does not force a signing on the manager. He rather waits for an opportunity where he can find a player that will fit with the club’s vision of football.

He can work very well with limited resources as he does not believe in spending big for signing players. And this is exactly what the Gunners need now. Monchi has a really good relationship with Unai Emery as is evident from their time together in Sevilla where they were in sync with each other and reuniting them can help make Arsenal a formidable force.
