It appears that after just a few games into the new season, the heat is rising between Premier League managers. Lampard arguing with Mourinho, the friction between Klopp and Lampard, and now, it’s the turn of Mourinho and Solskjaer.
Jose Mourinho, the former Manchester United manager, and Solskjaer, who replaced Mourinho at Old Trafford, have been continuously trying to score points in a tiff that makes them both look slightly ridiculous. Let’s be honest here, it’s not at the level we are used to when Ferguson and Wenger used to verbally spar with each other back in the day.
Who can forget Wenger’s reply to Ferguson’s comments on how Arsenal won the double in 2002. The Frenchman cuttingly remarked:
“Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home.”
In 2005, Mourinho called Wenger a football ‘voyeur’. To which an outraged Wenger replied:
“He’s out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful.”
Mourinho took over the anti-Wenger mantra by saying that Wenger was
“He’s a specialist in failure”
“I’m embarrassed for him”
Ferguson called Wenger a ‘disgrace’ in 2005 which prompted:
“He [Ferguson] doesn’t interest me and doesn’t matter to me at all. I will never answer to any provocation from him anymore”
Time for a series of new barbs from the modern era. Solskjaer recently commented on the way Mourinho and his team managed to avoid playing Leyton Orient after getting a bye into the next round of the Carabao Cup because of a mass outbreak of Covid-19 cases at the Breyer Group Stadium:
“It depends how you want to get there. You’ve got teams getting to this round without playing.”
After Brighton hit the woodwork five times in Manchester United’s narrow 3-2 win over Brighton, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said:
“You have to be happy Jose is not here to measure the goalposts!”

Mourinho responded, but referring to the number of penalties that United seem to get by saying:
“I understand for him the dimensions of the goalposts are not important. For him, what is important, is the dimensions of the 18-yard box.”
“He would never accept to play with a 17-yard box, I think he would prefer a 22-yard box! For him, it would be better.”
Ouch!! But at least, this made the United v Spurs match at the weekend slightly more interesting for the impartial viewer, with lots of extra pride now at stake. I can’t wait for the quotes!
