Monreal Signs One Year Extension As Arsenal Keep Their Options Open For The New Season

Nacho Monreal, Monreal

First he’s going and then he’s staying, Arsenal’s Spanish left back, Nacho Monreal, seems set to remain for at least one more season and upon hearing this, I felt slightly deflated.

Nacho Monreal hasn’t looked the same player and has been burnt in a chase or sprint by most players with a slight burst of pace over the course of last season.

What’s disturbing is they have extended the stay for Nacho Monreal, but refused to negotiate with Aaron Ramsey. They even let Danny Welbeck go like an unwanted balloon at a fairground and neither player had a decent send off unless you count that half arsed presentation of some piece of glass in a box at Arsenal’s final home game.

That occasion was destroyed completely when fans voted with their feet in a protest about the seasons collapse, the lack of funds and of course, Stan Kroenke, who lets be honest, is included in any credible protest.

However, having had a good moan, I have concluded that it’s possibly the right decision given the fact that Monreal’s replacement Kieran Tierney is coming back to fitness from long-term hip injury and double hernia surgery.

If that transfer goes ahead and it’s thought that it will if Arsenal get close to Celtic’s £25m valuation, then it would be madness to expect the player to go straight into the side before he has had a chance to recover fully.

This Is How Arsenal Mismanaged The Entire Transfer Window With Stunning Incompetence

Arsenal Firm Up Their Interest In Wilfred Zaha But There’s A Long Road Ahead Before A Deal Is Done

It’s early days, but Arsenal have yet to solve any of their defensive issues in this transfer window. Last season saw them ship a whopping 51 goals in a season and there’s no doubt that defence is an area which has seen them fall out of contention regularly for the past ten years.

If Arsenal and Unai Emery are going to compete at the highest level, they will need a top quality centre back, left back and recognised cover for Hector Bellerin.

Emery had an excuse for using Maitland Niles last term and although he acquitted himself well, he is not the long term solution.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
