That Old, Familiar, and Good Feeling About the New Arsenal Defence.

Arsenal Defence

There was a time that many will remember when the opposition hated playing against a synchronised Arsenal defence that spent hours working hard on basic drills from which unity was born. The back four of Dixon, Adams, Bould and Winterburn fashioned under George Graham has since achieved legendary status and rightly so, and a great many impartial observers now recognise them as the best English defence ever assembled.

Arsenal defence only ever got close to that kind of level again under Wenger with the inclusion of Lauren, Toure, Campbell, Cole and Keown in the Invincibles season. However, the defence has been bitty and at times, utterly dreadful for well over a decade for Arsenal.

There has been the odd performer worthy of note such as the young Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny but there hasn’t been a well-equipped, well-drilled, harmonious and cohesive unit since Arsenal moved to the Emirates and sold off its best players.

That’s a long time to be without a decent defence and subsequently, opportunities of silverware have spluttered for Arsenal. Many cite the move as the main factor, but it’s a combination of failures and the key oversight is that success in any competition results from having a solid backline.

If criticism is to be levelled anywhere, we need to point the finger at Wenger and his recruitment over a decade. They jointly failed to identify quality replacements and secure their services, but worse still was the club’s lack of ambition and direction in the transfer market.

Wenger needed to be told to solve the ongoing defensive issues, it was as obvious as the nose on your face.  Over many, many years, Arsenal’s challenge in all competitions was over by Christmas as the Gunners’ thin and inadequate backline was continuously exposed. A team doesn’t win anything with a patchwork defence and Wenger may have even overachieved with the odd domestic cup, mainly because his midfield and strike options kept the side afloat.

Now, finally, we could be on the verge of seeing a defensive renaissance with a collection of young, motivated and ambitious defenders, carefully pieced together for the estimated sum of just over £155m and that includes Aaron Ramsdale.

When you look at it from a slightly different perspective, a high-quality defender costs between £70 & £80m, so Arteta and Edu have performed miracles and the potential for Arsenal to now push forward in the coming seasons is huge.

There’s a long way to go, but the signs of unity and performance are there and if you consider the addition of William Saliba and Nuno Tavares to the mix, then this Arsenal defence could provide the basis for success for over a decade.

It’s exciting watching the components of a young team emerge and Arsenal fans finally have something to cheer about. A fabulous young, enthusiastic squad is emerging with the inclusion of some quality homegrown players. The journey won’t always be smooth and perhaps, it won’t be littered with success but it’s as much about performances and desire for a great many fans.
