Newcastle Looking to Sign Manchester United Star on Loan in a Swap Deal

Dean Henderson, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham

Newcastle United are looking to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a loan deal this summer, according to reports. The Magpies are willing to offer Karl Darlow in a swap deal that will see the English shot-stopper move to St. James’ Park.

Dean Henderson has endured quite a frustrating 2021/22 season with the Red Devils. He has largely been restricted to the bench, thanks to the resurgence of David de Gea which has further added to his resentment at Old Trafford. He only made three appearances for United this season (stats via transfermarkt).

The Englishman had a successful loan stint with Sheffield United, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year Award, as well as the Championship Golden Glove in the 2019/20 season. It was believed that Henderson would be the natural replacement to De Gea. However, upon returning from his loan spell, he failed to usurp the Spanish keeper.

As reported in The Sun, Newcastle United are interested in signing Dean Henderson on a loan deal in the summer window. The Toons are willing to negotiate a swap deal by offering Karl Darlow to the Red Devils.

Henderson first seemed to be in a strong position to replace De Gea as United’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, Covid eclipsed his fate, ruling him out at the start of the campaign, making way for the Spaniard to retain his spot, especially after some consistent keeping displays.

Henderson seems to have fallen out of favour at Old Trafford like many others who will see the exit door this summer. The Spaniard has got his starting spot nailed down and is likely to retain his place under new manager Erik ten Hag, leaving the English shot-stopper to look for first-team action elsewhere.

And as things stand right now, it is most likely that the 25-year-old will make a summer move. This leaves the Red Devils with the services of just Tom Heaton as backup, after having Lee Grant announce his retirement last week.

This deal is pretty ambitious from Newcastle’s point of view. They would get a young good-quality keeper with still scope to improve as the season progresses. It would also be a positive move for Man United as they would get rid of an unsettled Henderson for the time being and replace him with Karl Darlow who would most likely become De Gea’s backup, possibly ahead of Tom Heaton in the pecking order.

Several source claim that Newcastle United are in the front of the queue to sign Dean Henderson. Manager Eddie Howe already has the services of Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow in goal. Nevertheless, he is looking to bolster the position further by bringing in a shot-stopper like Dean Henderson to St. James’ Park this summer.

Sure, Darlow isn’t on the same level as the United keeper. But if a move is to materialise, then the 31-year-old will have a chance to improve under Ten Hag and get his chances in the cup games from time to time.
