According to reports, Newcastle United, freshly acquired by a Saudi-led consortium, are interested in Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard and have approached the Red Devils for a transfer.
While clubs across the Premier League remain active in the transfer market, the Manchester United board, yet again, seems impervious to their problems off the pitch. Despite reports alluding to the hierarchy’s acknowledgement of a bloated first-team squad, the club’s actions, hitherto, have failed to reflect their intentions in the transfer market.

United are in desperate need of an additional midfielder. However, the club’s indefatigable reluctance in hoarding unhappy and fringe players, who are given exorbitant wages, whilst failing to recruit efficiently has led to an unwelcoming conundrum. The Red Devils seem stuck in the past, and a 29-year-old Jesse Lingard is a marker of the boardroom’s incompetence at the transfer level.
Having savoured a remarkable loan stint with West Ham last season, the English midfielder was all but London bound ahead of the ongoing campaign. Now, having struggled for game-time and opportunities at Old Trafford throughout the season, the Magpies may just have offered the extravagant midfielder an opportunity to revitalize his career before the end of the campaign.
Lingard To Newcastle United
According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are said to be interested in acquiring the services of Jesse Lingard on loan until the end of the campaign. The out-of-favour United midfielder has been signalled as a potential addition, who could help Newcastle avoid relegation this season.

Lingard, who is heading towards the end of his contract at United after the completion of the campaign, remains amongst the underutilized players at Old Trafford, having made just nine Premier League appearances this season. Moreover, with the midfielder seemingly keen on making the World Cup squad whilst emerging as a player capable of generating a favourable fee, loan or permanent, for United, many agree the player’s future lies away from Manchester.
Newcastle United are said to be keen on signing Jesse Lingard this January, but United are only willing to release the player on a permanent deal. The 29-year-old is currently allowed to speak to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement for the summer.
However, with the opportunity to demand a favourable wage and sign for the desired club following the expiration of his contract, the midfielder is expected to run down his contract at Old Trafford, in contrast to moving permanently in January.

Moreover, with Newcastle needing to propose a favourable deal to the player and United, it remains to be seen if the Magpies succeed in luring the midfielder to St. James Park this month. The midfielder is said to be open to listening to Newcastle’s proposal, having been impressed with their signing of national teammate Kieran Tripper.
The Red Devils are in need of generating funds and trimming down the first-team squad and Lingard’s departure certainly paves the way for a midfield signing this month. However, known for their indecision in the transfer market, many expect the club’s hierarchy to continue remaining stubborn in their negotiation over the midfielder’s potential transfer over the remainder of the window.
Lingard To Help Newcastle Avoid Relegation?
While a move to Newcastle United remains uncertain, Jesse Lingard is certainly capable of adding firepower to their line-up. During his notable loan spell with West Ham last season, the midfielder stacked up a remarkable nine goals and five assists in 16 Premier League appearances.
He functioned as the team’s primary creator, majorly aiding their fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season. He has only six fewer contributions than Newcastle’s whole team in the ongoing campaign, that too in 7 fewer league fixtures.

With bottom-placed Burnley having played three games less than the Magpies this season, it remains inevitable for Newcastle to bolster their squad in hopes of improving their results and points tally over the remainder of the season. With Lingard’s goals alone having earned West Ham 10 points last season, the midfielder could be a miracle worker at St. James Park, provided a move materialises before the closure of the transfer window.

The Magpies have scored the third-least number of goals (21) in the Premier League this season and are keen on improving their quality across the attacking third. While the team have secured a reliable striker in Chris Wood from Burnley, they have struggled in creating adequate goal-scoring opportunities.
Provided Newcastle United snap-up Jesse Lingard in this window, the 32-year-old midfielder could certainly alleviate their troubles and catalyse their chances of avoiding relegation this season. Moreover, with the incentive of gaining first-team minutes amidst hopes of retaining his place in the international side, Lingard is more than capable of delivering for the Magpies until the end of the campaign.
