Ornstein Lied: Why Arsenal Have More Than £40m Transfer Funds

Arsenal, gunners transfer news, Arsenal transfer window, transfer window

Arsenal arguably had the worst winter transfer window this season among the Premier League teams. Which a big claim to make when Spurs haven’t made a signing all season.

However, despite making a loan signing, things haven’t played out well as Denis Suarez played less than 40 minutes in total, failed to make any impact at the club and ended up picking up an injury that ruled him out for the season. Things aren’t pretty for the Gunners.

This time around, however, Unai Emery is keen on making proper deals happen to seal the holes in his squad. But unfortunately, that comes with terms and conditions.

Emery’s side are firstly not financially backed with a big transfer budget. As per latest reports, the Londoners do not have much in the bank to spend. Secondly, should they not qualify for the Champions League, attracting quality players can be very difficult as well.

Adding confirmation, popular journalist and Arsenal insider David Ornstein shed light to what can be expected whilst on BBC 5 Live.

“I don’t think it will be the most spectacular summer for Arsenal but I do think they have some very important business to be done,” said Ornstein [via Arseblog].

“It all depends on their budget. If they’re playing Europa League football next season it looks like it will be around £40m. If it’s Champions League it would be significantly higher.”

“If it’s Europa League you’ve got to remember it’ll be their third year in that competition. They’ve also heavily invested in the last year or so, especially in the striking department, and they are adamant they will not break Financial Fair Play.”

However, the BBC reporter is known for being the club’s mouthpiece; he leaks only want the club wants to be leaked. Thus announcing a non-stellar budget gives them advantage during negotiations as negotiating clubs would know better than to demand more money. The £40 million budget is also a very misleading figure, as the new Adidas deal itself would leave the North Londoners with an additional £7.5 million, which then coupled with at least £30 million from outgoing players, would give a healthy figure of just over £77 million.

Additionally, Ornstein made a similar claim during the summer transfer window where Arsenal eventually spent £71 million; significantly more than the figure he had quoted.

But it’s very clear why fans may get misled by such talks. It’s not that it’s false, it portrays the situation at the Emirates worse than it is.

Should the Champions League money be also considered, the figure goes above £100. But that is, IF the London Reds can snatch the Europa League from Chelsea.
