The Paul Pogba Conundrum: Should United Sell Their Most Prized Asset or Go Out of Their Way To Convince Him To Stay

Pogba, Pogba loyalty bonus, Paul

We have reached this point now. What should Manchester United do with Paul Pogba? Should they sell the star midfielder or keep him for one more season?

These are the questions raising in the minds of every ardent Manchester United fan. The point of keeping or selling the World Cup winning midfielder arrived in the thoughts when Paul Pogba himself stated that its time for new challenges.

In a press conference at Tokyo, Paul Pogba said;

“After this season and everything that happened, with my season being my best season … it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

However, this is not a new thing for the Old Trafford based outfit. In August 2018, Paul Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola had offered the player to the Catalans of La-Liga. Also, Pep Guardiola revealed that Raiola offered Paul Pogba to Manchester City in January, 2018. However, none of the those deals materialized for the player.

Everyone knows that Paul Pogba wants to leave for Real Madrid. On the other hand, Los Blancos do have the money to sign the Frenchman.

However, instead of shelling out the money for the player directly, Real Madrid tries to create uncertainty in the minds of the player and exploit the readiness of Pogba to move away from Old Trafford. They use their media to bring in the player’s attention by telling that “he’s sick of Manchester United,” “he loves Zidane” etc., etc…

There is no doubt that the 26-year-old midfielder is a star player. He is a talented and brilliant midfielder. On his day, he can destroy any line-up and defense almost single-handedly. He can create fantastic chances and also, has the knack of scoring goals from outside the box and from set-pieces. This is the prime reason why he got a place in the PFA Team of the Year 2018/19 mostly dominated by Manchester City and Liverpool players.

Manchester United signed Paul Pogba for a reported fee of £89 million from the Juventus in 2016. There were high expectations about the player and that the team to be built around him.

However, the distrust of Jose Mourinho on the French player resulted in Pogba losing the captains’s armband. This further aggregated the dispute between the player and Mourinho, with the manager finally getting sacked.

After the sacking of the Portuguese, Manchester United board hoped to rebuild the team around him. For a while, it seemed fruitful when Manchester United won successive games under the new Norweigan manager.

However, after the PSG turnaround, Manchester United did very little to achieve the CL spot. The angry Stretford End fans taunted Paul on his inconsistency against the relegated sides. This has worsened the situation for the player as he feels he is not loved at Old Trafford. On the same issue, Patrice Evra gave his opinion by stating,

“I think [Pogba] will leave, because you need to feel the love when you play somewhere, you need to be committed. If Paul decides to stay another year and then leave, or stay another few years, maybe the fans will love him because he is committed”

On the other hand, Manchester United fans love the players who wear their heart on their sleeves. When the player was announced, he didn’t even mention that he plays for one of the best clubs in Europe.

He has said, “Proud to represent @adidasfootball across the world!”. But, not Manchester United, not till date.

Nevertheless, Manuncians like a player saying ‘Proud to represent Manchester United’. The fans love the players who give everything to the club. But, they don’t feel the same with the French star.

They don’t sing songs for the player. The inconsistency is not for one match, but a string of disappointing performances.

On the other hand, the board simply cannot sell the player. They want to wait for the biggest offers because of his exceptional talent.

But where could he go?

Real Madrid have already spent on Hazard, Jovic and a few more players. Barcelona doesn’t want to shell out so much money. Though PSG have the chances of breaking the bank, but they have their own share of problems in the form of Fair Play Regulations. In this particular situation, Ed Woodward cannot expect a bidding war for the French midfielder.

According to many United fans, Paul is an influential player in the Red Devils’ dressing room. Players look up to the World Cup winner. Few get positively influenced while, others are negatively influnced.

It’s high time for the player to stand behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is trusting the player blindly and support him with all his skills and talent. Solskjaer is a man on a mission and Pogba should definitely help the cause of rebuilding the club.

Paul Pogba has his arguments. The player’s agent has his set of arguments and the same with Solskjaer. If the petty clashes among the player, his agent, the manager and the club goes on and on, at the end, it will be the club which will struggle.

Its high time for Manchester United to make a decision on Paul Pogba. Should they let one of the best talents in the world leave or convince him to stay at Old Trafford?
