An old dog can’t learn new tricks, but if the dog performs effectively, he doesn’t need those new tricks. A lot of Gooners voiced concerns when Petr Cech was picked for the Manchester City game ahead of new signing, Bernd Leno. However, a majority of fans are happy with the Czech’s performance in the past few games. With a man-of-the-match performance against Everton, Petr Cech has proven that playing him instead of the German is not a mistake.

His shot-stopping has been impeccable. He can’t be blamed for a single goal Arsenal have conceded in the league yet. The 36 year old currently is third the list in the number of saves made by a keeper this season.
After the game with the Toffees, Aubameyang adds,
‘I think 20 times maybe, Cech kept us in the game. I think we are improving every day and feeling good and better, so when we win it is better for the team.’
In my opinion, Bernd Leno has a big hand in Cech’s impressive performances. The former blue knows that the team has a perfect substitute and can’t afford mistakes anymore.
However, playing from the back is an issue for Arsenal’s number 1. We have witnessed situations where Cech has given away unnecessary corners to the opponents due to the high pressing and numerous sloppy passes too. Blaming him for these is criminal.
Petr Cech has been one of the greatest goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen and his era has seen some ruthlessly physical football- which could not be farther from Emery’s sweet and patient game- where the ball is played out of the back. We just have to let time show its magic for Unai Emery’s changes/tactics that he implemented on the shot-stopper.

The added advantage of playing Petr Cech is that of leadership. In Koscielny’s absence, Petr Cech captains the team and provides players with the encouragement they need. The experience that he brings is unparalleled, he has won the Premier League and the Champions’ League and is no stranger to anything that this league has on offer. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the 36-year-old is getting back to his best:
“I actually think Petr Cech, in these first five or six games, looks like the Petr Cech I remember at Chelsea. Certainly in terms of the saves he makes, starting positions, coming out at people’s feet.”
For now, Leno would have to wait a bit longer for his time in the Premier League. I see Petr Cech playing this entire season as Emery’s number 1 in the premier league with his recent performances. We face Watford on Saturday at the Emirates on the back of 6 wins out of 6 in all competitions.
