Manchester United travel across town this weekend to face city rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The game is likely to deliver a mouth-watering match-up. United will be keen on getting all three points as they try to cement their place in the top 4.

Having played out a disappointing 0-0 draw to Watford last weekend, Ralf Rangnick’s side will be keen on avoiding dropping more points on Sunday. The hosts enter as the overwhelming favourites. United, however, will look to deliver a compelling performance and salvage crucial points this weekend.

Rangnick is likely to have additional firepower at his disposal. As per (manutd.com), Edinson Cavani is fit to feature on Sunday. In addition, Scott McTominay remains likely to get his place back in the starting line-up. He missed the last two games due to illness. However, United could have a weaker bench this weekend. Rangnick hinted at “question marks” vis-à-vis fitness issues over a few players for the fixture.

Manchester United Starting XI Against Manchester City

The team looks seemingly balanced following an optimistic switch in formation. One of United’s problems is their ability to maintain control of the game. They have also failed to remain composed in front of goal throughout the ninety minutes. United keep getting poor results owing to their inability to see out games. They have also been unable to capitalize on their goal-scoring opportunities.

A poor result on Sunday could see their hopes for top-four plummet over the coming weeks. However, with the hosts requiring a win against United, the visitors can be calculative in their approach this Sunday.

Goalkeeper

David De Gea (GK): De Gea has been United’s most impressive performer this season. He remains unlikely to be displaced over the remainder of the campaign. Having majorly contributed to the team’s prospects throughout the campaign, the Spaniard will be keen on delivering yet another decisive performance on Sunday.

Defenders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB): En route to regaining his place in the starting line-up, Wan-Bissaka is expected to be given the nod at right-back on Sunday. The hosts are likely to have the bulk of possession. United will expect a solid defensive performance from the full-back this weekend.

Raphael Varane (RCB): Varane is amongst the team’s handful of reliable players. He will be key to United’s defensive display against City. Expected to remain focused throughout the ninety minutes, the Frenchman will be keen on putting a compelling display on Sunday.

Harry Maguire (LCB): United gave Maguire a rest against Watford, but is likely to regain his place at centre-back against City this weekend. His selection will raise some eyebrows. Make no mistake, the Englishman will be keen on finding form and delivering a resonant performance on Sunday.

Luke Shaw (LB): With the visitors likely to deploy a deep defensive line, Shaw remains in line to displace Alex Telles for the weekend’s fixture. He is amongst the set of players yet to find consistency this season. The England international will be looking to have a significant contribution on Sunday.

Midfielders

Scott McTominay (CDM): The Scottish International sat out the recent fixtures due to illness. Now he is fit and is in contention for a place in the starting line-up. Nemanja Matic will also be an option for Rangnick after his impressive performance against Watford last weekend, but McTominay is expected to be given the nod ahead of Matic for the game against City.

Paul Pogba (CM): United hope that Pogba plays a significant role in the game on Sunday. He will be keen on delivering a classy display at the Etihad. With his indispensable creativity from midfield, the Frenchman remains vital to the team’s prospects over the remainder of the campaign.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM): Bruno is the team’s most creative asset across the attacking third. This means United will hoping yet another ingenious display from the Portuguese maestro Sunday. He squandered several goal-scoring opportunities in recent fixtures, and the attacking midfielder’s impact is likely to reflect on United’s attacking prowess against City.

Forwards

Marcus Rashford (RW): Rashford is underserving of a start, but lack of experienced wide players mean United will put him straight into the starting line-up on Sunday. He has been enduring a rough spell of form. So the winger will be keen on redeeming himself and proving the critics wrong over the remainder of the season.

Jadon Sancho (LW): Sancho has been amongst the team’s brightest sparks in recent weeks. He will be keen on delivering a noticeable performance against his former club. Offering a range of attributes, the youngster will be key to the visitors’ attacking flair on Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST): Ronaldo will be keen on improving his goal tally over the coming weeks. More so as striker Edinson Cavani is back in contention after recovering from a groin injury. Questions remain over Ronaldo’s longevity at United, but the legendary Portuguese international will look to silence his doubters on Sunday.
