Manchester United have initiated talks with PSV Eindhoven, regarding a transfer deal for Dutch youngster Steven Bergwijn, according to the Metro’s report in United Kingdom.
The 21 year old is currently enjoying an impressive campaign in the Dutch league Eredivisie, under Mark van Bommel, scoring 9 goals and providing 9 assists in 18 appearances. The youngster also earned his first call up for the Netherlands national team, under Ronald Koeman. He included the youngster for his 2018-19 UEFA Nations League A campaign.
Steven Bergwijn s first match was on 13th October 2018 against Germany as a starter, where the Oranje defeated the Germans. The final score was 3-0.
The Dutch midfielder is under a contract with PSV till 2022, with his release clause being £18 million. Although in today’s market, Steven Bergwijn is valued at around £25 million. In a transfer market, where players at their prime are valued around £65 million and above, a player like Steven Bergwijn is certainly a bargain like so other.
Despite being a 21 year old, Steven Bergwijn has tasted glory with PSV Eindhoven. When it comes to his team trophy cabinet, he has won
- 3 Eredivisie titles (the Dutch League)
2014-15, 2015-16 and 2017-18
- 2 Johan Cruyff Shield (the Dutch Super Cup)
In terms of Individual Honours, he has won
- UEFA European Under-17 Championship Golden Player: 2014
- UEFA European Under-17 Championship Team Of The Tournament: 2014
Considering these achievements in mind, a talent like Steven Bergwijn is a super bargain in today’s market. A youngster with promising future talent, quick adaptability, team player, and a player who has an eye for the occasional screamer and a natural ability for breaking opponent’s clean sheet for his team, Bergwijn has got it all.
A prime aspect of Bergwijn, is his capability of operating on either flanks. This comes in as a huge advantage for the Red Devils, especially under the tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær, where United once again seem to believe in a system of free-flowing attack.
As the Red Devils are enjoying a sweet spell of victory under Solskjær, who now has recorded 8 victories out of 8 fixtures, the addition of Bergwijn is going to be a huge advantage for the Reds, especially in terms of building a future first team squad. United and PSV Eindhoven share a good relation with each other, thanks to the 2015 signing of Memphis Depay, who was sold by the Dutch club for £31m.
The youngster might find a rhythm with United’s interim manager, but the Red Devils major challenge is when it comes to convincing PSV to sell their future prospect. Although United seem to be in the leading position for this signing, Steven Bergwijn has has grabbed the attention of most of Europe’s elites, namely Bayern München, Inter Milan and rivals Liverpool F.C.

“I am not interested in the big clubs or the transfer rumours. I decided to stay at the PSV this summer because I wanted to build upon what was done last season.
Manager Mark Van Bommel thinks I am among the best in Europe so I must continue on this path and repay everyone’s trust in me. I am happy that the team is doing well.”
If the decision makers at United are really prioritising the signing of Steven Bergwijn, it seems like they need to wait till the upcoming summer transfer window. If United’s reported interest is indeed true, then Manchester United may have to accept PSV’s terms, if they intend to put pen and paper with the youngster.
PSV will certainly look to leverage the significant interest in the youngster when negotiating with United in a bid to increase the principal value of Steven Bergwijn, as the youngster is yet to decide about his future.
