Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal chief, took a dig at Manchester United over their high wages for Alexis Sanchez. Also, Arsenal chief said that the high wages were the stumbling block behind Aaron Ramsey’s departure.
Gunners’ midfielder Aaron Ramsey bid a tearful adieu to Arsenal and their fans earlier in the month after 11 years at the Emirates Stadium. Aaron Ramsey has agreed to pre-contract offer of Juventus in February. The Welshman will move to Italy on a free transfer after the final of Europa League. According to Daily Mail, the player is expected to earn £400,000 per week in Turin.
Aaron Ramsey racked up 369 performances for the Gunners. During his times at Emirates Stadium, Ramsey scored 64 goals for the club and has 65 assists to his name.
The most painful aspect of the deal is that the Welshman will be leaving the club on a free transfer. Otherwise, for a player of Aaron Ramsey’s stature, it would have cost atleast £40 million to lure away from Emirates Stadium. The club is cash strapped and the free transfer is basically smearing salt on the wound.
The head of the football, Raul Sanllehi stated that Aaron Ramsey did not want to leave the club at all. But on the other hand, Arsenal club was reluctant to meet the wage demands of the Welshman. Raul said that “meeting the wage could have caused unrest and imbalance in the squad”.
Raul Sanllehi went on to say,
Because of our circumstances, because of not renewing Aaron on time we were in a situation in which Aaron had incredible offers building up on the salary.
He was really keen on staying with us, he was ready to make the effort but at the end of the whole process we had to be responsible for ourselves and protect the interests of Arsenal.
The statement from the head of Arsenal football is expected to be as a direct dig at their arch-rivals, Manchester United. Manchester United gave a mind-boggling contract to the Chilean forward, Alexis Sanchez. Alexis Sanchez joined Manchester United in January of 2018 where he earns a wage of £500,000 per week. According to Raul, signing of Raul has caused unrest in the United squad with other players like David de Gea and Paul Pogba expecting a significant rise in their wages.
