Real Madrid Interested in Loan Deal For Manchester United Defender; Does he Have a Future at Old Trafford ?

In a surprise development over the last couple of days, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has apparently expressed interest in signing United full-back Diego Dalot on a season-long loan from Manchester United, according to Sport Italia journalist, Rudi Galetti.

Carlo Ancelotti has returned to the Santiago Bernabeu after four years since his last term and is now embroiled in making the necessary changes to an ageing squad at Real Madrid. In this process, he has decided to include Diego Dalot in his Real Madrid squad to challenge the veteran Dani Carvajal who has been inconsistent lately and plagued by injuries.

Diego Dalot has had an impressive campaign last season, especially during the second half of the season during his loan stint with AC Milan. He played 33 times for the Rossoneri in the course of the season during which he scored twice and assisted three times. The Portuguese international had become a regular with AC Milan who are also supposedly interested in having him stay at the San Siro for another year on loan.

The Braga-born right-back was already on the radar of Ancelotti, as he tried to sign the player during last summer transfer window when he was at Everton. It is now being reported (Correio da Manha via MEN) that Real Madrid will propose a loan deal with an obligation to buy for Dalot at the end of the loan spell.

This is a welcome move for Manchester United: a deal with an obligation to buy would help them get the player off the books and help with their immediate finances unless they are still interested in the player. This seems very unlikely as he has failed to establish himself at Old Trafford ever since his transfer from Porto back in 2018, which prompted the club to loan him out in the first place.

The club itself are leaving no stone unturned with their ambitious transfer plans for the future this summer with deals for Jadon Sancho already concluded and prospective deals for Varane and Camavinga in the works. These plans also include another right-back for which United have been targeting Kieran Trippier, which implies that they do not see Dalot as part of the club’s future as such.

Competition between clubs like Real Madrid and AC Milan for Diego Dalot is good for Manchester United, as they are likely to fetch more than they would expect otherwise. However, these are just speculations and there is nothing concrete as of yet. In my opinion, United should look at offloading him now when his stocks are high. They are not interested in another season with Diego Dalot at the club and their transfer plans speak to that so why not make the most of this interest now.

As promising as a player such as Dalot might be, if Manchester United decide to keep him for another season, neither the club nor the player will have anything much to gain from that and quite a bit to lose.

United certainly cannot promise enough playing time to the player at the moment with Wan Bissaka at the club and it will be better if he tries his luck somewhere else. Unless Ole has any other plans to integrate him into the squad, it is better to loan or sell him when there is demand than watch him rot on the bench for the whole season which would be undesirable for all parties involved.
