Manchester United’s £65m Rated Transfer Target Rejects PSG in Favour of a Manchester United Transfer

Raphael Varane, Kieran Trippier double swoop, United, alternatives

According to reports, Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has rejected a move to PSG in favour of a Manchester United transfer. Varane has been the prime target for Manchester United to strengthen their defence this summer. The Frenchman is also eager for a move, refusing to sign a new contract extension with his current club.

Varane has been a top player for Real Madrid, having spent a decade at the club. He is an important player for the team but is now keen on new challenges away from the club. The 28-year-old has been widely speculated with a move to Old Trafford for several weeks now. Zidane’s departure as head coach and Madrid’s refusal to accept Varane’s wage demands are also contributing factors that sparked his interest in a move away.

Manchester United certainly need reinforcements at the back for the upcoming season. Now that United have secured Jadon Sancho, the centre-back position is the key concern for Ole. United seem to be making progress in negotiations with the player and Madrid are simply stalling for a higher fee. Real Madrid are hoping to sign Mbappe and would be looking to get all the funds they need by selling players.

Tweets by Jorge Calabres from Spain and Rob Blanchette from England, two reliable journalists but certainly not of the highest level, indicate that Varane prefers a move to Man Utd over PSG.

Calabres claimed on his ‘El Bunker’ channel (via MUFCMPB) that the Frenchman was a top target for PSG but signed Ramos instead because Varane prefers to join United.

Meanwhile, Rob Blanchette stated something similar about the matter. He claimed that PSG confirming the transfer of Ramos should accelerate the process between Madrid and United. Moreover, Real need the cash and certainly don’t want to lose the player for free.

Moreover, recent reports suggest that Real Madrid have given Varane the ‘green light’ to negotiate his exit amid strong interest from Manchester United. Ole will be looking to wrap up the deal quickly as the French international entered the final year of his current contract.

Varane’s transfer would be favourable for all parties. The Red Devils need a player like Varane to partner up with Maguire and stabilise the defence. The centre-back has been a boyhood fan of the Red Devils, almost joining the club back in 2011 before Madrid swooped in at the last minute and took him to Bernabeu.

The Los Blancos are under serious debt and cannot pay the wage of £12 million (around £200,000 per week) that Varane desires, which Man Utd are ready to offer. Also, they need funds to bring in new players and letting Varane leave this summer will fetch them a good fee while forcing him to stay will see him leave for free next year.

Moreover, PSG have the likes of Marquinhos and Kimpembe at the centre-back position and they also secured Sergio Ramos on a free transfer this summer. The 28-year-old may not like the idea of reduced game time and having to fight for a starting position in the first team when he could instead get a direct spot in Manchester United’s starting lineup and be a top dog in defence alongside Maguire.

Varane would bring lots of experience and great leadership qualities to Old Trafford. His arrival could bring back the era of the Ferdinand-Vidic partnership that defined United’s defence for several seasons. Varane’s transfer would certainly raise the quality of the team and, with the signing of Jadon Sancho and links with Camavinga, United could finally hope of boasting a side worthy of fighting for the Premier League title.
