United Legend Reveals What Marcus Rashford Needs To Be Doing To Become Better Than Lukaku And Sanchez

Marcus Rashford

Ever since former Liverpool player and current pundit Jamie Carragher declared that Marcus Rashford should move to Everton and be the main man to develop his career, his future has been a subject of debate by many pundits. Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is no exception, giving his point of view on Rashford’s current situation at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old’s performance for England in the past two games in his preferred central role fueled the speculation about his club future, since Jose Mourinho deploys him as a wide player. Granted that he is a very good technical player who can play well in the wide area, we have seen that his performances in a central role were better than those in a wide role.

Ferdinand believes that Rashford can “fight off” Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to become the team main striker.

You got to fight, you got to show fight for that position. you ain’t growing up at Manchester United to walk out of that door at the first bit disruption. No, you got a No. 10 on your shirt for a reason, you are there you got a talent, fight for it.

“He is that kind on kid as well. he is that type of kid. I think he will be disappointed he is not playing all the time not starting.

“I think he will want to start and I think he will want to prove to people that he is good enough to start on the team and he will fight off the likes of Sanchez and Lukaku to try and win that shirt to be the No. 1 striker at that club, [because] he has the potential.”

Mourinho has come under criticism for his usage of Rashford, but he defended himself by saying:

“Marcus Rashford is not Dominic Solanke, not Ruben Loftus-Cheek, not Dominic Calvert-Lewin. he is Marcus Rashford, Manchester United player, with an incredible number of appearance and an incredible number of minutes played at the highest level in the best possible competitions.”

Rio seems to agree with Mourinho on his method of Rashford’s development. He said :

” I just think there is a balance. I think it is been out of proportion. I don’t think it is too far Mourinho’s fault and too far Rashford’s fault. I think there is a balance in the middle and think that Mourinho in developing a player you have to take responsibility of how they develop.”

“Yeah he is getting the minutes, but as player I look at if I am Marcus Rashford.: Have I started enough games? Do I feel if we have to go play a big massive game am I going to start that game all the time? Does he see me as his main man to go win games?”

However, the former Manchester United center-back feels that Marcus will not be able to do those things.

“In terms of building confidence, that is not a great place to start from. And that’s where I will probably sympathise with Marcus, but then you can flip back onto Marcus and say: hold on you need to have the character to sit there and say I am going to fight.”

“You can bring in Lukaku. you can bring in Sanchez. I am going to be the main man. I am Manchester United. I am Manchester United through and through. I know what it means to be here as a Manchester United player and I am going to prove to you that I am the main man.”
