Ronaldo & Maguire Lock Horns As Row Over The Captain’s Armband Brews Over At Manchester United

According to recent reports, tensions have seemingly been simmering at Manchester United. As reported by The Mirror, there has been a growing discontent between Cristiano Ronaldo and club captain Harry Maguire over the captaincy role.

According to the report, both Ronaldo and Maguire are said to have been in conversation with interim boss Ralf Rangnick regarding the transference of the captaincy role to the Portuguese striker for the remainder of the campaign. The report also stated that the English centre-back has been feeling “marginalized” with Ronaldo’s role in the dressing room and at the prospect of losing the armband permanently.

Although the idea behind changing the captain is said to have been taken considering his poor form and to taking pressure off him, the report suggests Maguire continues having the, although lessening, vocal support of Ronaldo to continue as captain, while there remains a growing belief in the dressing room vis-à-vis a change in captaincy.

The report also details that the former Real Madrid forward has been mentoring the young players since Rangnick’s arrival in November and that his role is said to have contributed to the manager’s decision to take the armband off Maguire at some point before the end of the campaign.

A Rift Between Maguire & Ronaldo?

The development of a potential rift between the two players comes after Marcus Rashford rubbished claims of disharmony and divide within the dressing room earlier this week. Maguire, himself, was quick to publicly respond to a tweet by David McDonnell suggesting a rift between Ronaldo and the English centre-back over the armband, saying the team remains focused and united for the trip to Leeds on Sunday.

Ralf Rangnick, too, was quick to dismiss the possibility of a change in captaincy during his press conference last week. When asked about the captaincy rumours, the German manager responded saying:

“I must say it is absolutely nonsense. I have never spoken with any player about the possible change of captaincy. It’s me who decides who is captain and I don’t have to talk to anyone else about that. Harry [Maguire] is our captain and he will stay our captain.”

Many have suggested that Manchester United’s unsettled dressing room is said to be a major contributor to their inconsistent and incoherent displays on the pitch throughout the ongoing campaign. Addressing a question aimed at the presumed disharmony within the dressing room during his press conference ahead of United’s game against Leeds, Rangnick was quick to dismiss any possibility of it saying:

“There were players unhappy until the close of the window because the squad was too big and players weren’t getting game time — the atmosphere in the dressing room is better than it was a few weeks ago for that reason.”

While many remain disillusioned with the club’s direction moving forward, numerous reports suggesting the formation of cliques and breakaway groups within the dressing room are reflective of United’s performance on the pitch, especially, in recent games.

With the club in need of securing a top-four finish at the end of the season, Rangnick will be hoping to set aside differences and organise his team in a bid to improve their performances. The German manager will be looking to gain consistent results until the end of the campaign.
