Why Don Raul Might Have to Bite the Bullet if Arsenal Fail to Strengthen in the January Transfer Window

Raul Sanllehi, January transfer window

We’ve heard the reasoning, the explanations and the tiresome excuses as to why Arsenal don’t like the January transfer window and why they will only buy strategically to cover injuries or because of shortages in other areas.

Like every other Arsenal supporter, I understand there was a hefty amount of investment in the last window, but Arsenal’s circumstances have changed drastically and they are on the verge of a crisis depending on results.

It’s not rocket science, Arsenal have been shaky at the back for more seasons than I care to remember and yet they entered into a deal for an injured player and loaned another back to their former employer.

As often happens in life, it bites you when you least expect it but if you plan carefully and act with a degree of caution, the impact of events is considerably less.

Arsenal and Raul failed to look after the club’s interests and the decisions made were highly questionable. Subsequently, Arsenal have had more defensive concerns this season and less cover during a dreadful campaign where goals have been conceded needlessly.

Arteta has coined a catchphrase ‘non negotiable’ and that will fit this January transfer window nicely, because Arsenal football club has a responsibility to its fans to ensure it’s not only run efficiently but that it remains in the elite league.

Raul Sanllehi is taking huge risks with the club should they fail to resolve the problems that are evident in the present and have been obvious in the past. The jury has been out with the majority of the fans so far regarding his leadership but should Arsenal’s woes continue and should they be dragged down the table into a relegation battle, Raul’s position will be untenable.

The trouble with Arsenal, Edu excluded, it’s run by bean counters with hardly any football knowledge and if you are about to cite Raul as a football man, don’t bother !

Do your research and learn why Barcelona let him go, he made massive mistakes there by trying to be Mr Big and cost the Catalan club millions in bad transfers and lost revenue from not competing at the highest level. Perhaps, history is trying to repeat itself and Raul will find all the help he needs in Stan Kroenke.

Let’s remind ourselves of what Sanllehi said of the January transfer window:

“Globally, it’s not the strategic window. By definition, that’s the summer window,”
“That’s when you plan the season ahead.”

I take issue with that last part, but let’s continue:

“Last summer we did an incredible effort where we were very grateful for the support we got from our ownership to really go one step further …”

I’m interrupting again, one step further ? In what direction ?

“…and make, as I said, a real investment to increase our expectations for the season.”

Those expectations haven’t been met at all, quite the opposite. He added:

“The winter window is much more tactical.
“Now we’re going to have conversations between Edu and Mikel to see what things we can do or what we should do.”

Isn’t that completely obvious, try asking anyone, try asking the supporters.

Anyway..

“But again, the strategic window and the one that Edu and his team are always working for in the longer term is the summer window.”

Arsenal have peddled out this bullshit for the last few years and at this stage of the proceedings I’d even fly with a couple of loan deals and chase Merih Demiral or Dayot Upamecano in the summer.

The loans with options to buy would obviously have to add the necessary stability to the backline, but at least it would help Arteta add strength and depth.

The bottom line is Sanllehi needs to act, he has no choice really because failure isn’t an option. If things don’t improve during the January transfer window, he could find himself following Gazidis and Wenger through the doors of the Emirates.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
