Sevilla beats Jose Mourinho at his own game: Match Review

Sevilla

Jose Mourinho has made his reputation as a manager who always has the right decision in place to tackle each opponent however on Wednesday night, all his tactics seemed to have failed after Sevilla dumped United out of the Champions League.

The boss’s tactics to progress through in the Champions League failed to deliver against a mid table Spanish side which qualified for the quarter finals for the first time in six decades.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Against Liverpool on Saturday the team had digged in to protect a two goal lead and were lauded for that, but three days later the same formula has been vehemently ridiculed by the fans and pundits alike after the tie ended with a unwanted result. With Manchester United now out of the tie, NetBet UK is now offering outright odds of 4.00 to Manchester City of winning the Champions League.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Although the team played with more possession than at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium during the first leg they had no result to show for it.

Sevilla travelled to Old Trafford for the second leg of the last 16 stage of the Champions League  and the result turned out to be a very much disheartening one for the fans. Mourinho’s men was humiliated by a 2-1 margin by a mediocre Spanish side and had only themselves and their manager to blame for the mockery they had made of their club by putting on an absolutely atrocious display in front of their home fans.

[spacer height=”30px”]

At home, where the hosts should have showed their superiority against a modest Sevilla side they were barely able to conjure a descent and clear attacking performance in front of their home fans

[spacer height=”30px”]

It has been four years since the nerve shredding tension of the Champions League at the Old Trafford and this was as stressful as ever. The tie turned unfavorable for United as soon as Vincenzo Montella introduced the first substitute for the visitors, the one and only Wassim Ben Yedder who turned out to be the bane of Manchester United with his early clinical performance within a span of 4 minutes.

Ben Yedder came in as a substitute with less than 20 minutes to go for the match and within six minutes, the Frenchman had scored twice to stun the fans and break their hearts at the Old Trafford.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Everything Mourinho did to make it better ultimately turned to be futile and the man himself seemed clueless as to what exactly happened in those 4 minutes. His introduction of Paul Pogba who was left out for Marouane Fellaini (another big twat), appeared less effective and utterly impotent than the man he substituted.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Moreover, the first big mistake by the boss was to play the Afro hair-styled joker in the first place in place of Pogba or the man in form Scott McTominay. Then again, Mourinho made an even bigger blunder by not playing Mata from the start because of which we completely lacked the much needed creativity just like the first leg.

[spacer height=”30px”]

It now seems to me that the special one has turned into the Foolish one and his tactics turned wasteful from successful. The loss to a mediocre Spanish side should get Mourinho thinking that his ways are wearing thin.

His method of plunder and lock-down approach to a match may have brought success in the past for him on quite a number of occasions but this Manchester United FC, on nights when the Reds are supposed to play as the dominant and world class team at home, surely this was not the place or the time ? Mourinho’s strategy to block the opponent by sitting deep and occasional counter-attacks has been broken by Sevilla and this should serve to prove a timely reminder to him that at the end of the day true football always prevails over his troglodyte version of the game.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Jose Mourinho’s idea of playing Fellaini in no-man’s land to head the ball into Romelu Lukaku’s path gave away every chance to lose the ball to Montella’s men and they turned out mostly chasing the shadows of Sevilla’s midfield.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Although Steven N’Zonzi and Ever Banega had absolute control on the midfield, it wasn’t until the arrival of Ben Yedder that Sevilla had the edge to score a goal.

[spacer height=”30px”]

On the other hand, though Lukaku scored a late goal for the hosts, time was not on our side to be able to unleash a late comeback.

[spacer height=”30px”]

Moreover, Jose Mourinho’s comments during the post-match interview infuriated the fans even further :

[spacer height=”30px”]

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]

“That is not the end of the world. I sit in this chair twice in the Champions League and I knock Man United out at home at Old Trafford,”

[spacer height=”15px”]

“I sit in this chair with Porto, Man United out, I sit in this chair with Real Madrid, Man United out. So is not something new for the club and of course being Manchester United manager and losing a Champions League tie at home is a disappointment, obviously.”

[/perfectpullquote]

[spacer height=”30px”]

This of-course was not received well by the supporters and this utterly insolent and ignorant twat is surely not supposed to understand our emotions for the Red Devils.

[spacer height=”30px”]

The fans responded on twitter on Mourinho and his failure:

[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]

[spacer height=”30px”]

Even pundits have criticized Mourinho for his ‘destruction of the pure form of the beautiful game’ tactics. The Guardian quoted from the Spanish publications who have beautifully humiliated the Portuguese and his clogging type football.

[spacer height=”30px”]

El Mundo Deportivo wrote:

[spacer height=”20px”]

‘Manchester United who are millionaires but misers; so much money, so poor’

AS front page read:

[spacer height=”20px”]

‘Sevilla won and so did football’

[spacer height=”30px”]

Still we as fans of Manchester United hope to cope with this heartbreaking result and hope for the best in the coming weeks with a second place finish and the FA Cup all to play for.

[spacer height=”30px”]

GGMU….!!!!!!!
