The Carabao Cup: History, Dates, and Changes

Football fans, fans, passion, misc

While much of the focus of the 2022/23 season in England will be on the Premier League, the Carabao Cup Final offers a pathway to silverware for teams big and small. The knockout tournament has long been known as the League Cup or EFL Cup as it is organised by the English Football League, which consists of the second-tier Championship, the third-tier League One, and the fourth-tier League Two. The League Cup was created as something of a tool for the Football League to deal with the Football Association and to deal with the ever-growing popularity of European football.

Why Carabao Cup?

Starting in the 1990s, sponsors began to attach their names to this tournament, and the sponsor names stuck: the Coca-Cola Cup, the Worthington Cup, and the Carling Cup. The latest sponsor is Thai energy drink company Carabao, who bought the rights to the knockout tournament title starting in the 2017/18 edition, leading to the nickname Carabao Cup. Peculiarities of the Carabao Cup

The English Football League Cup was not as prestigious as the FA Cup, which has a much richer history and is contested by clubs even from the lower divisions of the English football league system.

The tournament is also known as the Carabao Cup, after the main sponsor of the tournament, Carabao Energy Drink. The Carabao Cup is the showpiece of the EFL’s cup competition and is one of the three major awards of the domestic football season in England.

At the beginning of the 21st century, following the restructuring of European football, in particular international competitions, like the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, there were considerations to remove the prize of European qualification from the winners of the League Cup. However, it has managed to retain its place in the Europa League. They made some compromises so that the League Cup would remain popular, particularly among fans of clubs for whom success in cup competitions is their only real chance of reaching Europe.

Carabao Cup comeback

The Carabao Cup has shown a significant revamp in recent seasons, with the competition reborn in the eyes of the Premier League’s best players.

The competition was put back on track due to renewed interest by Manchester City, Liverpool, and others. The 2022/23 edition could well be another thriller.

As a shorter format competition compared to the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup is more flexible in terms of scheduling. Football fans are waiting and hoping that their team will win the 2022/23 Carabao Cup.

With no preliminary and qualifying rounds due to the competition featuring only 92 teams from the Premier League to League Two, the tournament begins in earnest at the first round stage.

The Carabao Cup/EFL final is traditionally played earlier or even before the FA Cup and Europa finals and is usually in late February on the calendar.

The semi-final usually takes place at home and away, which makes it different from the last four FA Cup ties. The final meeting is saved for Wembley.

2022/2023 season dates and venue

The 2022/23 season final will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, 26 February. The 2021/22 final kicked off at 4.30 pm (UK time), but the start time for 2023 final is yet to be confirmed.

The demands of the Premier League schedule, especially with the added pressure of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, mean that the 2022/23 schedule will constantly be changing.

The Carabao Cup final does not have the same level of importance as the FA Cup, so Premier League games are expected to be played on the weekend when the final takes place.

Due to the likelihood of at least one Premier League team competing in the final, the number of games is likely to be reduced.

Influence of the World Cup

The changed schedule of the World Cup in November/December has had a significant impact on the English football calendar. As a result, the winners of the competition that qualify for the 2023–24 UEFA play-off round are expected to be disrupted during the winter season.

The Premier League season has started earlier than ever to accommodate the World Cup break, while the FA Cup final has been moved to June for the first time in history.

Premier League authorities have confirmed the mid-season break will have a significant impact on Round 16, with players expected to join up with national teams from November 12/13, with the season resuming on December 26.

The World Cup will have a severe impact on the preliminary rounds of the Carabao Cup, if not the final itself, with the third round scheduled for November 8 and the fourth round for December 20/21.

The players are expected to be rested and not take part in these games both in the lead-up to the World Cup and if their teams reach the final stage in Qatar, with the World Cup final scheduled for December 18.

Carabao Cup Assumptions

As the 2022 FIFA World Cup is over now, Premier League clubs have returned to the competition in the round of 16 (fourth round), leaving eight teams ahead.

Several teams from the lower division looked to continue their good results in the competition and reach the final eight, but only one managed to do so.

The two Manchester clubs are, what a surprise, one of the favourites and are expected to get to the semi-finals. After they avoid each other in the draw, of course, if you know what we mean.

Eight clubs have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, with the Round 16 deciding who will advance to the next stage. The Carabao Cup quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, January 10 and Thursday, January 12.

If the 2023 Carabao Cup quarter-finals are level after 90 minutes, the game will go straight to a penalty shoot-out.
