Enough is Enough : Its Finally High Time For United To Be Parting Ways With Jose Mourinho And Justifiably So

Cantona on Mourinho

“I am not one of the bottle, I think I’m the special one”, sounds legitimate coming from a manager who had just won the Champions League with FC Porto. Over the span of his managerial career it would be hard to argue that he wasn’t. Mourinho has won a total of 25 trophies with five different clubs which saw him moving from Portugal to England to Italy to Spain and finally back to England. Currently at the helm of Manchester United and contrary to his achievements in the field of football the question arises, “Is he still the special one or not?”.

Manchester United currently sit 10th in the Premier League table with a total of 10 points in 7 games. This is their worst start to a Premier League campaign in almost 29 years. United made an almost similar start to their campaign way back in 2002-03 when they just had 11 points in their first 7 games of the season. The United of 02-03 was different, though. The team had a playing style, it had optimism and unity, some world class players and a world class manager. United went on to win the league that season with a total of 83 points.

This is Mourinho’s third season at Old Trafford – keep in mind that he has never been at a club for longer than this period. Not much has changed since the Moyes era began in 13-14. The team has no playing style at all, it lacks optimism and most importantly it lacks the necessary understanding between the manager and his players.

The most evident example of it is the ongoing rift between Paul Pogba and Mourinho at the club. Mourinho, who was once applauded for his man-management at clubs, is now not able to get the best out of players like Sanchez, Pogba, Martial and Lukaku.

Mourinho is also known to be a manager who has built his teams on the foundations of its defense. His teams are known to be very solid at the back. Unsurprisingly though, only four teams in the current campaign have conceded more goals than United in the Premier League. At a time where teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are scoring for fun, he still resorts to playing long balls to Fellaini.

But who exactly is to blame? It’s a very well known fact that Mourinho wanted to bring in a couple of players this summer but didn’t get the required backing from the United board. The Glazers have been known to churn money from this club and the executive chairman of the club, Ed Woodward, has made the club more of a brand than a football club. It’s now more than ever that United need to appoint a director of football.

Things have never been worse, the club is at war from top to bottom and things need to change at the earliest. This season can still be salvaged but Mourinho needs to be sacked right away amongst a number of big decisions the club needs to make.
