Why Lucas Torreira Can Be As Good As N’golo Kante If Only He Is Allowed To Do This

The summer transfer window of 2018 was a pretty successful one for Arsenal as they bought in the likes of Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Matteo Guendouzi and Lichsteiner. Adding to this list Unai Emery bought in a player that could may well be the signing of the season for Arsenal, Lucas Torreira.

Lucas Torreira was bought in for out-going Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla who were permanently sold by the club. Seeing as how the club needed a deep-lying midfielder, they waited till the World Cup was over to finally sign the 22-year old Uruguayan from Sampdoria in Serie A of Italy. He signed a contract of 3 years with Arsenal paying £25m for him.

Uruguay had a good world cup and Lucas Torreira certainly had one better. Unai Emery has admitted that he has had an eye on the midfielder but he waited until the end of the World Cup for him to fully commit to his country. Some might say Lucas Torreira is a gifted player and he has already drawn comparisons with Marco Verratti because of his Italian connection. Torreira is indeed an excellent midfielder and under Unai Emery, we are yet to see the best of him.

With the Premier League under way and four matches already done, Lucas has made four appearances and has already started to impress. But he has still been struggling to get a start since Matteo Guendouzi is chosen over him. Unai Emery recently spoke about how Lucas has to work hard for a position in the first team. However, Lucas Torreira is already making the young frenchman’c critics bite their tongue with his performances which led to him being awarded with player of the month for Arsenal.

Playing  in his same position, Chelsea have N’Golo Kante, who also stands the same height as Lucas and he has won the Premier League twice and the recent World Cup. Kante is a player of exceptional discipline and he maintains that every game, that’s what has made him already a great player. Kante also has a long way to go as Torreira but they both have the same technical abilities and if Unai can channel it out of Lucas then he might well be as good as Kante. Arsenal under Unai Emery have major plans and thats clear for us to see and for them to be implemented, Torreira might well have a huge part to play like Kante did for Chelsea.

Adding to this comparison, club legend Gilberto Silva says,

“Can he have the same impact as Kante? I hope so.

The Premier League is not easy. You have to work hard to be considered a top player and progress game to game, season to season.

But he’s got the potential. We saw that at the World Cup, where he did a great job for Uruguay.

I watched him in the World Cup. He did a very good job. If you see the way he plays, he plays the game very simply, he makes things easy for him on the field.

He gives protection to the back four and support to the guys up front, he tries to find the best spot to be. The protective instinct is very natural for him.

Before [Torreira] arrived none of the other players were the kind who would sit in front of the back four. It’s a hard job, not everyone wants to do it.”

Lucas Torreira just needs a little more time to adjust before he starts pulling the ropes to make Arsenal win titles again. Ngolo Kante is definitely a good player but Lucas Torreira can be as good as him or even better, he just needs more time.
