We learnt three things as Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium away from home in the Premier League on Thursday night.
Erik ten Hag’s men seemed to be cruising towards a nine-point lead in fourth place as they scored two well-executed goals in the first half, courtesy of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Meanwhile, after Tottenham’s humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle in their last match, their supporters had hoped for a better reaction in the first half of this game.
However, in the 2nd half, Spurs managed to get a goal back through Pedro Porro, and then equalised with a well-deserved goal from Son Heung-min, who converted Harry Kane’s low cross. This result takes Tottenham up to fifth place in the Premier League table, six points behind Manchester United, who have played two fewer games.
1. Jadon Sancho Gets A Goal Finally
Jadon Sancho has had a frustrating season, struggling to build momentum in a campaign interrupted by multiple stops and starts. Despite this, there were indications of a return to form during the game against Ryan Mason’s team.
Although he was given too much space and time by Porro, and Christian Romero failed to pressure the winger as the latter moved onto his right foot, the English international’s goal showcased the flair that he exhibited during his best days at Borussia Dortmund.
The 23-year-old played on the left-wing against Spurs, a position that Rashford is often said to prefer. Sancho appeared comfortable in this role, with him and Antony on the opposite wing able to cut inside and pose a goal-scoring threat.

However, the ex-Dortmund winger was substituted in the 61st minute, with Anthony Martial coming on. The English attacker still struggles to complete 90 minutes regularly. Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag will be pleased with the progress he saw.
2. Harry Kane Shows Why He Is The Best
There have been ongoing speculations about the future of Harry Kane at Tottenham, given his impressive scoring record but the club’s sustained lack of success. With his contract expiring next year, it remains uncertain whether he will stay or move on, with United being strongly linked with him. However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s reputation for driving a hard bargain could result in a transfer fee of up to £100m.
The Tottenham captain’s impact on the game against Manchester United was limited until midway through the second half. As the game progressed, his influence grew and he demonstrated his creativity by setting up Son for a clear shot at goal. Kane continued to push forward and eventually provided the cross that led to the equalizer, showcasing his typical run and cross technique.
3. Ten Hag’s Tactics Were Lacking Despite Midfield Dominance
Bruno Fernandes had been in doubt for the game due to an injury, but he was deemed fit to play and he certainly played a pivotal role in the match. Fernandes, along with Christian Eriksen, was given free rein to dominate the midfield with Casemiro providing a solid defensive cover behind them.

The hosts’ pressing intensity dwindled quickly, and the away side’s intelligent play saw them pick apart the Spurs defence. Fernandes and Eriksen controlled the game in the first half, with the Portuguese assisting Rashford’s goal in the 39th minute.
In the second half, Tottenham improved their game and had several chances to take the lead. The Red Devils also had opportunities to win the game, with Fernandes hitting the bar in the 67th minute. Ten Hag made two double substitutions in the second half, but they did not have the desired impact and the game ended in a draw.

In the second half, Tottenham had ample opportunities to clinch a victory, while Manchester United will regret not capitalising on their earlier chances. The draw means that the Red Devils still have work to do to secure their Champions League qualification for next season.
