According to sources, Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is looking elsewhere in January due to lack of contract negotiations at Old Trafford. 

Ander Herrera is the one who wants to move out of the club in January due to a new contract not being offered to him. The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season and he has made himself clear that he wants to stay at the Theatre Of Dreams. Herrera triggered his one year extension clause in his contract last November.

After which, Ander Herrera had expected that new fresh terms will be offered to him and the club and especially Jose Mourinho wouldn’t let his contract come out to his final 12 months. But, much to his surprise, it did which has forced Herrera to listen to offers in January.

The frustrations grew even more when Mourinho made his approach to renew the contract of Fellaini and no such efforts were made for him. This made Ander Herrera feel that he wasn’t being taken seriously at a club where he gave so much.

Apart from that, Mourinho has always been an admirer of Herrera’s work rate and ability to read the game which was evident when Mourinho appointed Herrera to man-mark Eden Hazard where he produced one of his best perfromances in a United shirt by not scoring a goal and creating another but the way he made it feel that Hazard wasn’t even playing, that was the more commendable part. He even referred Ander Herrera as one of the smartest players he’s ever met after Europa League final in 2017.

I think the signing of Nemanja Matic and Fred in 2017 and 2018 respectively has further reduced his playing time. In 2016-17, he made 31 appearances in the league out of which,4 were substitute appearances. In 2017-18, after the arrival of Matic, he made only 26 appearances in the league out of which, 13 were as a substitute. So, this shows his playing time as reduced considerbly from a starter to a bit-part player.

Also, the rise of Andreas Pereira and Scott Mctominay through the ranks has further signalled the end for the spaniard at Old Trafford. And practically, he should move on. He has had an amazing time at Manchester, lots of great matches, trophies etc. but there is always a time to find another home. Also, once Ander Herrera was tipped to be the next captain of the side.

Such was a character of Ander Herrera on and off the field. If he gets an offer from a Europa league side, he should accept one last major paycheck as a player at a big club before he turns 32-33 and MLS or Chinese Super League comes calling.

Though it will be tough for the United fans to say goodbye, who absolutely love him as he was one of those players who always gave their 100% for the team and never looked away from a challenge. Also, he was also named as the next Paul Scholes, who was forever loved at the club. So, even the comparison makes him special.
