Manchester United Swoop in at the Last Minute to Agree Deal With Dutch Club to Sign €17m Rated Defender

Tyrell Malacia, Manchester United

According to latest reports, Manchester United are set to beat Olympique Lyon to the signature of Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia. It was reported last week that the French club were close to signing the Dutch full-back, but the Red Devils seem to have become the frontrunners in the race.

Tyrell Malacia has put up a great display for the Dutch club in the 2021-22 season. The Dutch lad chipped in with a solitary goal and registered four assists in 32 Eredivisie appearances (stats via Transfermarkt). Feyenoord even finished third domestically and enjoyed an extended run till the UEFA Europa Conference League final. However, they missed out on the title as Italian side AS Roma won the decider to become the first club from Italy to win a UEFA competition in 12 years.

The 22-year-old’s good form has helped him garner positive reviews, eventually getting him a call-up to the Dutch national football team, where he has earned five caps so far. The defender has also featured in 50 matches during the 2021-22 campaign with Feyenoord.

As reported by The Sun, Lyon were said to have outmuscled United and leading the race for Tyrell Malacia. The Ligue 1 club launched a bid of €13 million up front with €2 million in add-ons and were waiting on Feyenoord to return with an answer. They were hoping to secure the defender’s signature this summer.

Now, according to The Athletic, Manchester United have moved ahead of Lyon by coming in at the last minute with a higher offer to sign Tyrell Malacia. The Red Devils have agreed a deal worth €17 million with the Eredivisie club to sign the Dutch left-back.

The proposed bid would see the Manchester club pay Feyenoord €15 million up front with a further €2 million in performance related add-ons. The deal will also include a sell-on clause, which will enable the Dutch club to receive some remuneration from any future sale.

The move accelerated quickly due to the ongoing negotiations for Frenkie de Jong as the Barcelona midfielder and Malacia share the same agent. It now depends on the Dutch full-back’s decision, as personal terms are yet to be agreed to complete the potential transfer. Feyenoord director Frank Arnesen told 1908NL (via The Athletic):

“The agreement with Man United is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell.”

“If Malacia says yes, then a transfer to Manchester United is imminent”.

Manchester United were rumoured to be interested in Malacia as soon as Erik ten Hag was announced as the new manager. The 22-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Eredivisie club this summer, with Old Trafford being a possible destination among several other potential suitors including Newcastle United.

The Red Devils have been linked with several players who have links with Holland. And with Ten Hag at the helm, it is supposedly believed that the Dutch manager is trying to bring in his compatriots and ex-players to Old Trafford ahead of the new season such as Antony, Lisandro Martinez, and Jurrien Timber.
