Atletico Madrid Defensive Star Confirmed on the Move | Will Prove to be a Huge Upgrade For United

Diego Godin

According to the news in Spain, the contract negotiations between Atletico Madrid and their captain Diego Godin have reportedly broken down with just six months remaining in his current contract.

Rumours suggested that Manchester United offered Diego Godin a three year contract last summer to improve their shaky defense, but negotiations ended without any consequence.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reigns of the Red Devils as the interim manager, United have looked refreshed and in much better spirits. Although, results have come in United’s favour, the defense still requires reinforcements.

Finally, the United back line managed to keep a clean sheet in the Newcastle Vs United game after four games of excellent attacking displays with shakiness in defense at times. The shut out against Newcastle was their first under new boss Ole, and third all season in the league.

The kind of defensive record being spoken off, seems to be of a relegation battling club, with just three shut outs and poor goals conceded from set pieces. The three goals United have conceded since Ole took charge, all have come from set pieces.

Even though De Gea has been getting back in form, he cannot be blamed for the silly defensive errors which lead to goals.

Ole’s predecessor and ex Man United boss, Jose Mourinho had been crying out for a centre half in the summer, and he had a strong case as to why. With their being shortage of quality young defenders around, United might just have to look for someone established but not with that long a future to commit with.

Diego Godin is one name United were linked with in the latter stages of the previous transfer window. And now it seems like it could be a realistic possiblity. The current Atleti captain’s deal is set to expire in the summer, with negotiations reaching a stalling point and no common ground being able to be reached.

Even though Diego Godin may be 32 years old, there is no way anyone can doubt his quality. The Uruguayan has made 259 appearances for the Los Rojiblancos since joining in 2010, and captained the side to their first league title in a decade in 2014. The 125 times capped Uruguayan is surely going to be an upgrade on all of United’s current centre-half options.

Our defense has come under continued scrutiny this season with some of our options being a rash tackler in Bailly, two wingers converted into full backs in Valencia and Young, a raw and young Diogo Dalot, with inconsistent Lindelof and Smalling, the struggling trio of Jones, Rojo, and Darmian and a rejuvenated Luke Shaw.

The defensive abilities of Diego Godin would definitely bring steel to United’s defense, and could be the leader at the back we’ve been desperately crying out for.

Godin could also help solve the De Gea contract issue in the long run as he knows him from his time at Atletico Madrid. De Gea’s agreement is set to expire in the summer of 2020 after his contract being extended for one year in November.

And with his deal set to expire in the summer, United board couldn’t do any worse than what they already have by taking their chances with an old but sturdy and proven Diego Godin.
