Home > Martial To Stay With United Till At Least 2020 As Club Extends Contract

Manchester United have exercised the option to sign Anthony Martial on for a further year.

Martial and his agent have been in talks with the club over a new contract for quite a while now. However, negotiations haven’t progressed according to plan. The club have reportedly failed to meet the Frenchman’s demands, despite putting a number of offers on the table.

It is still a positive sign that negotiations are ongoing. Martial looked destined to leave in the summer after a fallout with Jose Mourinho, which prompted his agent to tell the media his client wanted to leave. United did not budge though.

Despite not being on Mourinho’s good side, he was arguably the reason the manager still had a job. The 23-year-old is the club’s top scorer for the season and has saved them on numerous occasions. His goals against Newcastle, Chelsea and Southampton is the reason they aren’t even lower in the table at the moment.

Recently, the youngster’s agent stated that he was “very pessimistic about a positive outcome of the discussions”. However, now that Mourinho has been sacked, Martial might seriously reconsider staying. He is a fan favorite and has openly stated how grateful he is for the support he receives.

The club are hopeful they can sort out a new deal for him as soon as possible. In the meantime though, they can rest easy in the knowledge that he is going nowhere for at least 2 years. Martial’s contract was due to run out next summer, but the club have taken up an option in his contract to tie him down for another year.

They pulled off a similar move with David de Gea, who has also been hesitant to sign a new deal.

There is a genuine buzz around United once more, following the departure of Mourinho. The fans hope his replacement will trust the club’s young players, and Martial could play a key role.
