Manchester United Looking to Hold Talks With £40m Premier League Defender

Caglar Soyuncu, Leicester

Raphael Varane of Real Madrid, Pau Torres of Villarreal, and now an astounding development of events with Caglar Soyuncu of Leicester, seem like the story of Manchester United’s hunt for a centre-back is getting a new plot twist every day. According to Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur (via Daily Express), the Red Devils are about to initiate talks with Leicester City over a potential transfer for Caglar Soyuncu.

The Turkish international, fresh from their exit from the Euro 2020, is being linked with a transfer to Old Trafford as the club’s pursuit to land a central defender intensifies. United are going all out to sign their preferred transfer targets in the CB position, but are facing too many obstacles which justify their choice to look for alternatives.

The 25-year-old defender has taken over the centre-back position at Leicester City since Harry Maguire’s departure in 2019. He made 34 appearances for the club in his first season in the Premier League, a testament to his skill and adaptability.

Although he was out for 15 matches last season with an injury and later with COVID-19, he played all the remaining games with great zeal and energy reinstating his importance in the team. His season was rounded off with an impressive 1-0 win against Chelsea in the FA Cup final and help Leicester lift their first-ever FA Cup trophy.

Caglar Soyuncu has two years remaining in his current contract with Leicester City which runs till 2023. The player has no release clause in his contract, which means the only way to get his signature is to satisfy Leicester’s demands. United already had a taste of that during Maguire’s transfer.

Nevertheless, Leicester will certainly be holding out to get as much as they can out of the transfer if at all they have any intention to sell. Moreover, Ekrem also mentioned interest from Chelsea, which increases the competition for the defender.

Now, is he the type of player Manchester United really need? Will the fans be happy with the player? How much money should be allotted for the transfer? These are some of the questions the board has to ponder about.

Yes, the fans are unhappy with the current state of things at the club, but, just getting someone for the sake of getting someone does not help Manchester United in any way. Any impulsive decision right now will have repercussions for a long time to come. The transfer itself is not going to be easy considering there was no intention from Leicester City to sell Soyuncu. Putting your desperation on public display only plays into the hands of the opposition.

Also, Pau Torres, one of their defensive targets, has come out and spoken about his intention to stay at Villarreal and play in the UEFA Super Cup for his boyhood club. This probably rules out one of United’s major transfer options unless some miracle happens.

On the other hand, we also know about the uncertainty regarding Raphael Varane. Looking at this, Leicester understands very well the situation of Manchester United and will try to exploit it and the probable interest from Chelsea only adds to the competition. While Soyuncu is a quality player and might come good for United, they should regroup and have a good discussion over their transfer strategy.
