With Ander Herrera reportedly set to depart from Manchester United to PSG after a successful period of 5 seasons, Rodrigo is now the top priority signing for the Red Devils as a suitable replacement for Herrera.
Rodrigo plies his trade in La Liga with Atletico Madrid and has been hailed by superstars like Xavi to become a future star. Last summer, he joined the Los Rojiblancos from Villareal and signed a five year contract with them.
This is what Xavi said about Rodrigo:
“He’s a superb player, and he would be even better in a style like Barcelona’s,”
“He has the Barcelona profile, I see him as top class, like Busi [Sergio Busquets]. He lifts his heads up. He’s great. I think Barcelona should have signed him.”
According to Marca, United are willing to pay his release clause of €70 million as they look to bolster their squad with strong, young and proven players.
United look like a rejuvenated side under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and are now in the hunt for a top 4 spot in the Premier League. Moreover, the Red Devils are also in the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in five years. Although, the squad now looks settled, there are some weak links among them and the form of some star players is also a matter of concern.
The Reds face strong competition for Rodrigo from the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and PSG. This is definitely going to be hard for United and would want to sign the Spanish youngster as soon as possible before he goes away. Meanwhile, City look to him as a long term replacement for the ageing Fernandinho.
Rodrigo has appeared five times for Spain and plays at the heart of the midfield for both club and country. With a fine run of form this season, Rodrigo has attracted interest from the major clubs in Europe and is often compared to Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.
Fresh reports from Fox Sports Asia state that Borussia Dortmund are not willing to sell their breakthrough player Jadon Sancho. The former City striker, who is having a sensational season in the Bundesliga with 8 goals and 13 assists so far, was supposed to be one of the strongest signings for Ole at Old Trafford. This means that the need to sign Rodrigo increases even more, given his profile and form so far.
Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed:
“We will not sell him, that is fact,”
“It is clearly discussed with every person who is involved that Jadon plays in the next season for BVB.”
When further quizzed about Sancho’s Manchester United links, the BVB chief had this to say:
“I don’t care about that. Everybody knows that Jadon will play for us next year.
“That’s a fact and we don’t have a price tag for him. And because everybody in Europe knows that nobody contacted us.”
The signing of Rodrigo would be a big boost to United, who are also looking to add to their defensive capabilities as well as a right winger with the manager given a budget of €200 million to sign the targets. It will be interesting to see what happens in the transfer market with rumors building up around a lot of players and their futures.
