Yet Another Disappointing Second-half Display by the Red Devils | How United’s Players Fared Against Southampton

Manchester United vs Southampton, Man United

Many expected Manchester United to bounce back following an inexcusable result against Burnley, a disappointing display resulted in yet another draw as the Red Devils failed to deliver a comprehensive performance against Southampton on Saturday. Much like recent outings, United remained dominant throughout the first half but failed to maintain their discipline throughout the ninety minutes.

A well-taken goal by Jadon Sancho encapsulated United’s competitive first-half performance, however, an unsettling start to the second-half resulted in the visitors equalising soon after half-time. The team continue to struggle for consistency in performance amidst the diminishing hope for top-four and Ralf Rangnick will be keen on instilling discipline within the squad and securing positive results over the remainder of the campaign.

Starting XI

David De Gea (GK) – 7/10: While questions remain over the quality of outfield players at Manchester United, De Gea ensured Southampton were held to a draw at Old Trafford. The Spaniard accounted for numerous crucial saves and remained a reliable figure between the sticks.

Diogo Dalot (RB) – 5/10: Although a presence on the flank, Dalot failed to deliver an impactful performance against the Saints. With the team struggling to score goals despite creating opportunities, the full-back remains the least of United’s concerns heading into a pivotal phase of the campaign.

Raphael Varane (RCB) – 6/10: A commanding presence in defence, Varane delivered yet another compelling performance on Saturday. With the team’s defence likely to falter in his absence, the Frenchman will be keen on performing to the best of his abilities over the coming weeks.

Harry Maguire (LCB) – 3/10: Appearing to grow more and more into a liability, Maguire remains amongst the team’s weakest links. With Victor Lindelof providing competition, the centre-back will be hoping to improve his performance if he wishes to remain in the starting lineup.

Luke Shaw (LB) – 5/10: Having struggled to cope with Southampton’s fluidity in transitions, Shaw failed to deliver an impactful performance on Saturday. With Alex Telles likely to be granted an opportunity, Shaw will be keen on contributing to the team’s prospects over the coming weeks.

Scott McTominay (CDM) – 4/10: Struggling to execute his role as a sole defensive midfielder, McTominay failed to impose himself in the midfield on Saturday. With the team reliable on his services, it remains to be seen if the manager entrusts the Scotsman moving forward.

Paul Pogba (CM) – 5/10: Despite asserting himself in the midfield against Southampton, the United midfielder struggled to maintain his discipline throughout the ninety minutes. With the team short on proven box-to-box players, Pogba will be keen on contributing to the team’s prospects over the remainder of the campaign.

Bruno Fernandes (CAM) – 5/10: A diligent first-half performance saw Fernandes pull the strings for United across the attacking third against Southampton. However, much like his teammates, the midfielder too failed to maintain his level of performance throughout the ninety minutes.

Marcus Rashford (RW) – 4/10: Having failed to deliver an impactful performance on Saturday, Rashford is likely to be dropped with Anthony Elanga coming in against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday. With the winger struggling to contribute in attacks, Rangnick will be keen on finding a balanced front three over the coming weeks.

Jadon Sancho (LW) – 6/10: A boisterous presence throughout the ninety minutes, Sancho remained vital to United’s first-half display against the Saints. Having shown considerable improvement in recent weeks, the youngster will be keen on making the best of his opportunities until the end of the campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo (ST) – 3/10: Although an unwavering presence, Ronaldo continues struggling to contribute to the attack. Having failed to perform his role as a striker whilst having struggled to assist in transitions, the Portuguese will be hoping to get back to his best over the coming weeks.
