Manchester United set to Make More Transfer Mistakes This January Unless They Come up With an Actual Strategy

Manchester United Transfer, United, defensive midfield target United

Ole Gunner Solskjaer has a major task in his hands to rejuvenate and rebuild Manchester United. The decay has been evident since Ferguson retired and was exacerbated by continuous changes of management and personnel. The truth is, and you may not like hearing it, is that Manchester United are incredibly average and a great many of their current players are simply not good enough to be there.

Since the days of Beckham, Ronaldo and Scholes, there has been a massive dip in quality and I have to be honest, no one made the current situation worse than Jose Mourinho, who spent hundreds of millions fashioning a group of extremely ordinary individuals.

According to the whispers, United have funds to spare and are looking to secure three or four targets. If I were Solskjaer, I would have instantly snapped up Olivier Giroud to sharpen up the attack.

Giroud holds a ball up brilliantly to play others into good positions but he also has the ability to pull goals out of the bag and when he played for Arsenal, he scored crucial goals at key times during the season.

Unfortunately for United, the Frenchman is on the verge of joining Inter Milan and instead of acquiring a premiership ready striker, they are going to have to persist with Rashford and Martial who are unlikely to score 20 goals each per season to keep United in the hunt.

There’s been a lot of speculation regarding James Maddison, who has been excellent for Leicester but if United think that securing his services alone will change their fortunes, they need to think again. Maddison will make things happen but he will need quality support and if you are going to mention Pogba and McTominay, please stop yourselves.

Pogba hasn’t shown any desire to represent United with his considerable talents for about three seasons and McTominay, although a grafter, is just the best of a bad bunch. Manchester United need someone who anchors the midfield and orchestrates the attack, someone consistent with the necessary quality to drag the performances out of their team mates.

Christian Eriksen would have been someone that would have been perfect for Maddison and perhaps Donny van de Beek, who is a potential arrival.

United also have to consider the value of Jessie Lingard, who has become an ineffective passenger recently and determine if he really is someone that will produce the goods in the famous red strip.

Bruno Fernandes is another who is of interest to Solskjaer, but it’s said that Sporting Lisbon will ask for £60m to prize him away.

Again, one solitary purchase will not be enough for United to function correctly. There needs to be a partnership and understanding which is sadly lacking at the moment.

United’s purchases in the summer were ill conceived and slightly erratic. They needed a striker, so they bought defenders and Harry Maguire has not yet assumed the Rio Ferdinand mantle. Wan Bissaka is a work in progress but unfortunately, the former Palace man and Maguire are in the company of the likes of Ashley Young and Luke Shaw, which says it all.

Like their great rivals of the 90’s, Arsenal are under major reconstruction. Their situations are alarmingly similar, but United will be prepared to start over and that will include a new coach come the summer in the form of Allegri or Pochettino.
