Is Donny Van De Beek The Answer to Arsenal’s Midfield Void

Donny van de Beek, Arsenal

Arsenal have already begun searching for a replacement for Roma-bound Granit Xhaka and the North London seem to have turned their gaze towards Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, according to 90min.

I’m getting a little tired of comments on social media requesting patience in the transfer market when Arsenal have begun this period in the same fashion as always. Low key, seemingly indecisive, without commitment or intent. Yes folks, the Arsenal transfer campaign has all the ruthlessness of a priest at the January sales and we appear to be in for another long, hot, desperately protracted summer of near misses and dithering, it’s the Arsenal way.

Having already been beaten to the signing of Emi Buendia (Norwich) who decided to join a guaranteed middle of the table side rather than one which wanted to be more, the Gunners, who offered £5m more, are now having to cast their net in several directions in the hope of snagging at least one decent signing that could make all the difference.

Not a day goes by without another name being added to the Arsenal shopping list via the media and its now the turn of Man United misfit Donny van de Beek as an alternative, but before fans leap off a chair, threatening to throw soft furnishings around the room or run to a garage to construct effigies of Edu and Mikel Arteta to punish them in some pointless display of rage, Van de Beek could be a very good option.

It’s as if United had to spend some money to appease the fans in 2020, but Van de Beek hasn’t been the perfect fit with curiously frugal talent known as Paul Pogba. The lad simply hasn’t had the chance to show off his attacking and creative ability to the max. VDB has all the attributes to make a superb player and at 24, he is the perfect age for Arteta’s Arsenal.

Van de Beek has poise, balance, speed of thought, and above all, drives forward to the goal. He has a calmness that allows him to evaluate his choice of passes and route into the opposition area and his incisive runs can easily split a defence to create an opening.

His first touch is almost Bergkampesque and his finesse in tight spaces is obvious, but he’s also not afraid of the physical nature of the game which is something that the likes of Odegaard have yet to embrace. The Dutchman is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, can change gears and direction quickly, but isn’t blessed with blistering pace, he doesn’t need to be with the ball stuck to his feet.

If the rumours have any credibility, Arsenal will need to offer at least £40m to get their man, but I’m convinced that Van de Beek could be a wonderful addition to the Emirates and he’s very much in the mould of a Wenger-type player. Much has been made of the Neves transfer, another player that I rate highly, but if that deal doesn’t materialise, I’d happily take a punt on the Dutchman who just happens to be dating Dennis Bergkamp’s daughter (Estelle). Small world, isn’t it.

Anti Kroenke , anti Gazidis but always a gooner. Still wishes he could watch from the stands at the Highbury library.
