Manchester United vs Wolves: Three Reasons Why United Fans Should Be Optimistic For The New Season Despite Dropping Two Points

Wolves Vs United

After a destructive start in the first day of the 2019/20 Premier League season, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at Molineux Stadium by Wolverhampton Wanderers. After a 4-0 thrashing of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in the opening week, the Red Devils dropped points in the Wolves Vs United game.

Manchester United started brightly against the Wolves and dominated pretty much of the first half. Anthony Martial scored the opener for United in the 27th minute with Marcus Rashford providing a great assist.

However, the introduction of Adama Traore at half time induced a contrasting fighting spirit into the Wolves team. The high pressing paid off as Ruben Neves scored a brilliant goal in the 55th minute of the Wolves Vs United match to equalize for the Wanderers.

Paul Pogba earned a penalty later in the second half only to see his penalty being saved by Rui Patricio. In the end, United had to settle for a draw and dropped two crucial points which could have given them an early momentum for the rest of the campaign.

Let us look at three crucial things which we can conclude from the Wolves Vs United fixture:

#1) Anthony Martial Shaping Up Nicely

After the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter on a deal worth £75 million, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer entrusted the Frenchman with the No.9 jersey. Nevertheless to say, Anthony Martial has not disappointed the manager till now and has scored two goals in as many games for the club.

In the first half, Martial made a brilliant strike to put United ahead in the game. Seeing Rashford tear up the Wolves’ defense, Martial run past the center-backs and fired the ball past Rui Patricio with a wonderful first shot. If he continues to perform like the way he is currently, Martial can definitely win the Premier League Golden Boot in the near future.

#2) Should Manchester United Go For Ruben Neves ?

Ruben Neves had contrasting halves during the Wolves Vs United game. He didn’t have much of a pleasing first half as the Wanderers were toyed by Manchester United. However, after the break, he looked charged and was defining. More importantly, he scored the equalizer for the home team.

During the transfer window, Manchester United was linked with many players including the likes of Paulo Dybala, Eriksen, Milinkovic Savic and Bruno Fernandes. However, none of deals materialized and the Red Devils looked bleak in midfield apart from Paul Pogba.

In the Wolves Vs United tie, they needed a player who could unlock a team defending in a low block formation and work the goalkeeper. Same as Ruben Neves did in the second half for the Wolves. The Portuguese was great in midfield, especially after the break feeding balls to Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota and Traore.

If Manchester United are looking to bolster their midfield options any time soon, they should certainly target the 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder.

#3) Aaron Wan Bissaka is shining for Manchester United

Few termed it as a gamble when United signed Aaron Wan Bissaka from Crystal Palace for a fee of around £50 million. However, he shut his critics up following impressive performances during the pre-season, against Chelsea and also against the Wolves. He has had the most number of successful tackles of all the players on the pitch for the Red Devils.

AWB didn’t let a ball go past him and barely allowed Jonny Otto to rest. The Under-21 England international was very neat with his tackles and was brilliant with the ball. Wan-Bissaka could have ended the match with two assists along with the most number of tackles.

He picked up Jesse Lingard twice in the second half, but Lingard failed to wrap it up for Manchester United. Solskjaer should be very pleased with Aaron Wan Bissaka and he can be a revelation for the club at the right-back position.
