Manchester United’s chief executive Ed Woodward is eager to secure the signing of two new players before July 1st, according to reports.
United are in desperate need of a massive squad overhaul this summer, after a calamitous season that exposed numerous flaws at the club. Woodward’s own integrity and competency has been brought into question in recent weeks, and rightly so.
Since he replaced David Gill 6 years ago, all his managerial appointments – bar Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – have failed. Many of the signings he has made have already left the club, while a lot of the deadwood from Sir Alex Ferguson’s days are still at the club.
In a sense, he is out to redeem himself and show why he is capable of handling such a massive responsibility. The club desperately need a change too, if they are to even think of challenging for trophies next season. If reports on teamtalk.com are true, then Woodward might be looking to bring in ‘two new faces’ before pre-season.
An Old Trafford ‘source’ says:
“Some of the staff at Carrington have been told to expect at least two new faces visiting before training on July 1.
“The red carpet is being rolled out to prospective signings and their agents, showing them all we have to offer.
“We are pretty confident a couple are close to getting over the line. Talks are going well and have been before the end of last season.”
Solskjaer himself has made it clear that he would like to have a full squad in time for pre-season. Speaking at a press conference towards the end of last season, he said:
“You know there’s been so many players that have been written about, who we’ve been interested in, and there are so many players or players’ agents that have been in touch with our administration [to say] that they want to come here. I’m sure when we decide what we have to do, hopefully, we’ll get them by pre-season.”

Woodward is already off the mark this summer, having secured the signing of Daniel James, an exciting young winger, from Swansea. United have also released a total of 15 players so far – a clear signal of intent that changes are being made.
With James now secured, United are reportedly in the mix for four more players. Matthijs De Ligt, Toby Alderweireld, Thomas Meunier, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Adrien Rabiot and Bruno Fernandes have all been linked with a switch to Old Trafford. Should things go well for Woodward, he might just be able to snap up another player or two before pre-season.
