First Summer Signing Incoming | Arsenal Close To Securing Their First Target After Agreeing Deal With German Wonderkid

Markus Schubert, Markus Schubert to Arsenal, Schubert

Arsenal are set to secure a move for German goalkeeper Markus Schubert on a free transfer, according to reports.

Schubert plays for Dynamo Dresden in 2. Bundesliga and has been immense for the club. His contributions in goal have helped the club avoid relegation from the second tier of German football. At 21 years of age, he has been identified as a very talented prospect and is highly rated. However, his contract at Dresden expires in the summer and he looks set to leave the club on a free transfer.

Arsenal are keen on his signature, as they weigh up options for potential goalkeepers they can sign during the current window. The club are in urgent need of a new goalkeeper as they search for a back-up for Bernd Leno. Petr Cech, who was Leno’s backup last season, finally called time on his illustrious career at the end of last season.

David Ospina remains a quite capable no.2 and will do a decent job if called upon. However, he looks set to leave the club for Napoli this summer as well. The Serie A side are eyeing a permanent deal for the shot stopper worth around £3.1 million. According to reports in The Independent, the Gunners have allowed the Colombian to speak to the club, but have only given them till the end of the week to finalize the move.

Should the deal fall through, reports suggest that the club will keep Ospina as Leno’s backup next season. This will allow the club to send Schubert, if he does sign, out on loan in order to gain more first team experience elsewhere.

Schubert was initially identified by Arsenal’s former head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, who left the club in February this year. He will be Arsenal’s first signing of the window – one of their only signings in a window that is expected to see little activity following their failure to qualify for the Champions League yet again.
