Newcastle Revive Interest in €25m Rated Out-of-Favour Arsenal Fan Favourite, Magpies Determined to Sign Him

Aaron Ramsdale, Newcastle United

According to latest reports, Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Arsenal shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale ahead of the upcoming transfer window. The Englishman has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates and could be on his way out this summer.

Aaron Ramsdale was promoted to the senior team at Sheffield United after graduating from the academy in 2016. He signed for Bournemouth in 2017 and spent a couple of loan stints at lower division clubs before returning to Sheffield in 2020. He, eventually, joined Arsenal in 2021 in a £30 million deal.

The 25-year-old became an instant fan favourite, churning out excellent performances consistently. He was the first choice for manager Mikel Arteta, starting in almost all matches. However, he fell out of favour after the arrival of David Raya at the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.

According to Simon Jones of Daily Mail, Newcastle United have renewed their interest in Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies want to add depth to their squad and are looking to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer as a successor to their present shot-stoppers.

The Toons consider the English keeper to the perfect candidate who rightly fits into their requirement. Martin Dubravka (35) and Nick Pope (32) are getting older and sooner or later, they will need a replacement for their current keepers.

Moreover, Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has deep admiration for Aaron Ramsdale, having previously worked with him at Bournemouth. He was the man who signed him at Bournemouth in 2017 and gave the goalkeeper his first major chance of making a name for himself.

Howe tried to sign the 25-year-old last summer, but, unfortunately, a move didn’t materialise. The Gunners penned down a new deal with the the Englishman in May 2023 due to his stellar performances. However, he seems to have fallen out of grace this season.

Mikel Arteta signed David Raya at the beginning of this campaign which resulted in Ramsdale being relegated to the bench. Raya was brought in to create competition and a rotational model, but it hasn’t been the case with the English shot-stopper receiving very few appearances and even less game-time.

Despite being a quality goalkeeper, the playing time of Aaron Ramsdale has dropped down immensely. His outstanding performance last season made him win the Goalkeeper of the Year award at the 2023 London Football Awards. However, right now, it seems very difficult for him to displace Raya from the Arsenal first XI.

The England international is quite unhappy with the lack of game time at the Emirates. It’s quite reasonable for him to look for an exit and search for regular first-team football elsewhere. He is in his prime age and being benched for a whole season isn’t good for his career.

So, there are high chances that Aaron Ramsdale could accept the offer from Newcastle United. It will provide him a prominent stage to showcase his talents and evolve his career. Moreover, the Magpies seem to be more determined to secure his signature this summer and have already started making efforts.

Meanwhile, the North Londoners have already started looking for a replacement for the England goalkeeper. The club have shortlisted quite a few alternatives including Columbus Crew keeper Patrick Schulte and Brazilian shot-stopper Bento Krepski.
