Breaking via Sky Sports: Arsenal Agree £24m Deal in Principle For England International; Another Solid Long Term Addition to The Club

Liverpool vs Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale, Arsenal

According to reports from The Athletic, Arsenal have agreed a deal in principle with Sheffield United to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. A £24m + £6m in add-ons deal has been agreed with the Blades for the England under-21 International who was part of the Euro 2020 England squad this summer.

The Gunners had reportedly pulled out of the negotiations earlier after the clubs reached a stalemate despite being locked in talks for more than months now.

Before that, Arsenal almost looked like wrapping up the deal for the home-grown goalkeeper with a prepared bid of £24 million along with add-ons. Though Sheffield United rated their goalkeeper at somewhere close to €40 million initially. However, Sheffield Utd’s reluctance at agreeing anything less than that led to Arsenal pulling out of talks but now it seems everything is again back on track and more close to fruition than ever.

With a disastrous opening day performance against Brentford, Mikel Arteta was no doubt keen to add a goalkeeper and a creative midfielder to his side before the next few match weeks which involve matches against Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham all within a month.

And now according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have already agreed a £35m move for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard, and according to Sky Sports and Athletics’ David Ornstein, Arsenal have also reached an agreement in principle with Sheffield United worth £24m for Aaron Ramsdale.

In doing so Arsenal might just have received a much needed shot in the arm ahead of their incredibly gruelling open few fixtures in the League. A £50m double deal might have also potentially prevented them from managing to alienate their entire fanbase by hopefully preventing further embarrassment and ridicule in the league against their traditional top 4 rivals.

Though there may be legitimate arguments over the fee that was demanded by Sheffield United for such a young goalkeeper. This does put Gunners in a healthy situation as they can now afford to keep Arsenal No 1 Bernd Leno on his toes with a much needed genuine competition in the form of Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale looks to be a much better option for Arsenal than the other alternatives that where being considered at one point or the other like Andre Onana of Ajax and Neto from Barcelona. He might not be an Emi Martinez but he could be a dependable and long term no 1 at the club once Leno leaves.

While Arsenal have made a few significant strides this summer transfer window, with deadline day approaching it still feels as if there is still a ton of work to be done and that we are no where close to how strong our other rivals seem to be at the moment.

Speaking before the first game, Mikel Arteta has admitted his sides struggles and what he expects over the next couple of weeks. he said

“It’s been a difficult window.

Probably a lot of things will happen in the last week or so.

We are talking about probably the most difficult transfer market in this industry for the last few years and we are trying to adapt.”

Hopefully, Gunners adapt soon as their London rivals Chelsea have brought in Romelu Lukaku for a staggering fee of £98 million while Man City are preparing a mammoth of £150 million bid for Harry Kane. So needless to say Arsenal need to do a better job in securing their transfer targets and hopefully they can manage to put up a respectable squad in the league this season.
