Mohamed Elneny, Arsenal

According to confirmed reports, Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is set to leave the Emirates at the end of the season, announcing his departure in his last club interview. The Egyptian will leave North London after the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.

Mohamed Elneny began his youth career with Egyptian club Al Ahly in 1997. He moved to Al Mokawloon in 2008 and played for the youth side before being promoted to the senior team in 2010. After making 35 appearances for the Egyptian side, he was loaned to Basel in January 2013.

Impressed with the 31-year-old’s loan stint, Basel signed him on a permanent basis in May 2013. He made 144 appearances for the Swiss club before joining Arsenal in January 2016 (Stats via Transfermarkt). During his time at the Emirates, he also spent a season-long loan spell at Besiktas during the 2019-20 season.

According to the Arsenal official website, Mohamed Elneny will depart from the Emirates Stadium this summer on the completion of his contract. The defensive midfielder has been an integral part of the team since joining the North Londoners under Arsene Wenger.

The Egyptian international is the longest-serving men’s player for the Gunners, having spent the last eight years at the club. Mo is one of the last links still connecting the club to the Arsene Wenger era. He was signed by the Frenchman and played with Mikel Arteta during his first few months at the club.

The 31-year-old won the FA Cup in 2017 and also won two Community Shields during his tenure. The midfielder has featured in a total of 161 games for the club across all competitions, accumulating 6 goals and 10 assists (Stats via Transfermarkt).

Mohamed Elneny expressed his gratitude to the fans, club, and everyone he has been associated with while playing for Arsenal. He said:

“It’s meant a lot to me being here for so long, it was the best eight years of my life. I love this club so much, I love the fans, I love everything about Arsenal.”

“It breaks my heart – that’s why I refused to take to the field [on the lap of honour] because I was so full of emotion. But that’s life, my time here has come to an end and I’m very proud of what I’ve done for this club.”

“I love these fans and I gave everything that I had. I appreciate everything they did for me, in the good moments and the bad, and they’re always going to be in my heart forever.”
