Same after-goal celebrations, best of friends, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showed us that they could produce wonders for the Gunners if they play together. There’s a lethal Auba-Laca partnership brewing.
The match against Cardiff is proof of their brilliance. With Auba and Lacazette connecting for the second goal and then the latter banging in the winner, they were vital in securing 3 points.
The dynamic duo is the way forward for Arsenal. Unai Emery has experimented on the front 3 for the past games and the three against Cardiff were, in my opinion, most effective. The Frenchman proved his €53 million worth with a man of the match performance. His work rate was outstanding – hit the pole, assisted a goal, helped the defense a couple of times and scored the winner- a 10/10 performance.

However, until he scored, Auba wasn’t involved much in the game. Playing as a winger is quite new in the Gabonese international’s life, and it is understandable that coming back to defense isn’t in his DNA. Even in attack, he didnt complete many dribbles or crosses, he was an isolated figure. The moment he came towards the center to support Laca was when he scored.
We learn 2 things from this:
- Aubameyang is most effective when he is playing as a center-forward.
- Emery has to experiment a 4-4-2 formation with the pair up front.
Scoring 31 goals for Dortmund in the 2016-17 campaign as a striker is enough to prove that Auba’s best position is as a striker. A 4-4-2 formation has the potential to work out well him.
With Matteo Guendozi and Lucas Torreira playing in the center, Mesut Ozil playing on the right and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the left and the striker-pair upfront would be mercurial. Assist kings on the flanks + great finishers in the middle = GOALS,GOALS AND GOALS.

With a 4-4-2 formation in play, the Londoners would have an outstanding front 4 at times, however defense would be an issue. Attacking minded wingers such as the Armenian and Ozil would have a hard time coming back to defend with their playing style.
Our defense has already allowed 8 goals in 4 matches. We can’t be letting in goals at this rate. Hence a 4-4-2 formation is risky. With an attacking front 3, the defense could be taken care of, but Auba would have to play as a winger or 1 of the dynamic duo would have to be benched. Aaron Ramsey could play as the 3rd member of the top-3, his work rate is fantastic and his movement on the pitch too. However, he isn’t as cynical as Ozil or Mkhytarian.
Hence, I would love to see Emery experiment playing both Lacazette and Auba in 4-4-2 formation for matches to come. They have been top scorers of their previous leagues and have the capability to conquer the premier league too. Emery just needs to get his formation right and we Arsenal fans could see them glory days again.
