Sow has 21 appearances in the league and Champions League this season for his club (stats via Transfermarkt). He has also started all four of Switzerland’s games in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The 25-year-old has a contract until 2024 with Frankfurt.
The Gunners are looking to add some more depth to their midfield for the second half of the campaign. Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have been in imperious form so far. However, both players were also heavily involved with their national team dynamics in the World Cup.
With a busy schedule in 2022, any injury or fatigue to either of the two could seriously derail Arsenal’s campaign. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny are able backups, but Mikel Arteta could use players of better quality to compete with Xhaka and Partey.
Djibril Sow has been identified as a potential option for the Gunners in the January transfer window. Arsenal have also been linked with the likes of Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana continuously.
Arsenal Eyeing A January Transfer For Djibril Sow
Sow signed for Borussia Monchengladbach from Zurich II in 2015. After notching up just three first-team appearances across two seasons (stats via Transfermarkt), the Swiss midfielder joined BSC Young Boys. In 2 seasons, Sow registered 4 goals and 11 assists from 77 appearances, which helped him secure a move back to the Bundesliga, this time to Frankfurt.
So far, the 25-year-old has 6 goals and 13 assists in 137 games across 4 seasons.
Djibril Sow is a versatile midfielder. He can play in the defensive midfield, central midfield, or even in a more advanced role. He will provide more than an effective cover for both Partey and Xhaka from the bench.

If signed, Arteta could consider using Sow to rest Xhaka during the Europa League games, to boost Arsenal’s bid for the league title. The former Gladbach midfielder has a great passing range, and would be ideal to shield the centre-backs in Arsenal’s 4-3-3 set-up.
Arsenal are not the first Premier League side to be linked with a move for Djibril Sow in recent months. According to BILD,
“Nottingham Forest has offered a 50 million euro package for Sow. About 20 million euros, five million in bonuses and then, of course, his wages.
“(Forest would give him) a four-year contract (worth) over six million a year. That’s how you get to 50 million euros. It also shows what a great development Sow has enjoyed at Frankfurt, where he was a Europa League winner.”
However, with around 18 months left on the Swiss midfielder’s contract, Arsenal are better positioned to force a transfer.
